Server

You don't need to run your own server. You need to have a paid hosting service. And you need to have your own domain. That's about it.

Actually I agree with H_TeXMeX_H. I can't even remember the last time I even visited a Geocities site. Uh, 10 years ago? Maybe...

I never had a Geocities site anyways.

Indeed, I don't actually remember the last time I visited one, it was really long ago, back when I was using 56k and Windoze. And it was completely random, useless info ... kinda like facebook only crappier format and less popular.

Likely phishing abuses played a hand in its closing down. I can't name the number of times I reported spam, and also sent a copy to Yahoo to kill the victim credential collection URL sitting at Geocities. Spammers and phishers LOVED Geocities.

Why pay for something you can easily do for free (and likely better)?

Nothing is perfect

Well, your server hosting company can close down on you as well, no big difference.

As for people who think they can do better: any decent hosting company has 24/7 support, hardware monitoring and boxes you most likely can't afford. And besides, rack space costs money too.

I had a long struggel with Geocities to get a site taken down.

Back in its early days, someone had set up a Geo-site for the Leeds anti-war coalition. Then, that person had gone away without passing on the username and password. So we had a new up-to-date site, properly hosted, while the Geocities one had not been updated for several years, yet still hung around our necks like an albatross.

I'm not sorry that that has gone, at least.
