@sushantbhangale: Just boot form your XP CD, when it comes to partitioning the disk remove all previous Linux partitions and create new ones for your Windows installation.
If there are any problems please post back here, XP sometimes has difficulties with the installation if there are Linux partitions on the disk.

Leave the host operating system alone. Purchase a copy of VMWare for that host and install Linux on it. (Or, as the case may be, Windows on it.)

Intel chips have native hardware support for virtual machines. They run with virtually no speed penalty.

No true for older machines, many Intel chips from the Core 2 era (and before), especially the cheaper models, don't have hardware support for virtualization (which for me was a reason back in that days to get a notebook with AMD CPU).

Let me get this straight.

You have a machine that had XP on it and then you installed Fedora on it. You now want to remove Fedora and you are expecting XP to be there when you remove Fedora. Is that correct? If I am correct and you installed Fedora on the entire hard drive you will have lost XP all together, meaning XP is deleted totally. The only way you will get it back is to totally reinstall XP via an XP install disk.

True XP is not EOL but MS and google and adobe and everyone else are trying to kill it off .
The new Internet explorer will not even install on xp .

sushantbhangale you ARE AWARE that fedora 10 is 7 versions and three years out of date
and that Fedora 10 is MOST DEFIANTLY WAY past it's End of life
it went eol on" 2009-12-18"

The xp install cd is known for NOT being able to see or read any partition format that is not OWNED and patented BY Microsoft
( fat32 -long name table, and NTFS )

the install cd dose not even "see" a drive that is NOT in a MS format , hence the error.

YOU need to reformat is TO a MS format
1)
download and burn to cd ( using a second computer)
Gparted live cd
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

2)
format the drive to NTFS
3)
install xp

you are replacing the EOL fedora 10 with the even older xp
see above

xp will NOT see a drive that is not in NTFS or fat32 format
xp can NOT install to a non Microsoft partition

you HAVE to reformat to ntfs
then reinstall xp

Age is besides the point, XP is still supported Fedora 10 isn't.

Not true, XP (and previous versions such as 98 and 95) will recognise a RAW drive that has never been formatted.

then install fedora 10??

no

install fedora 17( but 17 will not install on 256 meg ram )

fedora 10 is SEVEN versions out of date
there has been NO support for 10 since "2009-12-18"
when it went END OF LIFE

fedora 10 is DEAD

however with only 256 meg of ram
the dead fedora 10 will not run well
and you will not be able to use the current firefox
fedora 10 will not run NEW programs

please use a SUPPORTED Operating System
you might want to install CentOS6.3 or even the older ( and still supported CentOS5.8 )

on this old hardware

You seem to be missing the point here John. No one here has told him to install a distro that is beyond EOL. You however are telling him XP is EOL (then backtracking on that statement), only to insinuate that because XP is older than Fedora 10 it is nearly useless. If his machine can take XP then it is still a viable option for him, EOS (End of story).

100% of the drives I purchase are blank from the store. Do you think as soon as the platters are made they have Windows on them?

If he wants to dual boot he should install XP first, then whatever Linux distro he chooses that will run on 256 MB RAM. It saves alot of stuffing around doing Windows first.
