Wow, I think I just got my first webserver working!
I decided to fiddle around w/ apache some more, and I think I got my first ever server up! I got it hooked up to a little directory, w/ some test stuff.
http://192.168.1.101/ is it, it work at all? I did it from another computer hooked up to my network, and it worked.
If it works for you then I'm gonna pull out my old HP, throw in the xp harddrive, get wi-fi to work, hide it in my closet and run it headless for most of the time.
how do I do that? I've looked at guides sometimes, but they never make sense... atleast I was able to change the directory or whatever from the "It works!" screen, to a directory on my computer.
Thats what I typed in when I was installing Apache, and is also the only IP address I remember seeing in the file in the apache folder. But when I type that address in, it just brings up the login prompt for my router, so I can log into that and change things.
It's okay to post the IP I guess, but right now it's just for my router, and I dont anyone hacking into that (not that you guys would do that )
But when I type in 192.168.1.1, that also lets me login to my router (i got a linksys)
Well..if your router is properly passworded...we can't hack it. And I don't think that if you type in taht IP address it would go to your router. Thats just dumb. You might need to forword port 80 to the computer Apache is running on.
There is something called dydns so that even though your IP address changes people can still access your machine.
I could just setup in the router to be static IP instead of Dynamic, but I don't want to screw up anything, my Dad isn't gonna be too happy about that.
And for dydns, don't you need to pay like 15 bucks for that? My Dad just go into like a blog type thing for a group of people, and I guess I could host lots of his stuff then using imageshack.
Yea, this is my first server.
Also, it does work... right? Hows the speed? I'm just over a 54mbps wifi G adapter. (it doesnt usually run at that speed, usually 48 and down).
Also, I'm thinking this will be secure, but my Dad is thinking that doing this will allow people to just hook up to his harddrive and stuff... that wont happen... right? Lots of people host webservers, and I dont hear them about people hacking into there stuff.
So cool! If my school's proxy server doesnt block this, I can just upload files onto my computer from home, and access them at school.
