Before I go on I just want to make it clear that I dont want any answers which basically say "Use Linux". I am using Windows XP because my ADSL connection doesnt work on Linux properly and basically I haven't had much of a go with Linux. Anyway...
Does anybody know of anysites which give instructions on using spyware (and stuff like that) that come built in with Windows XP. I used to have a site but I lost the URL and can't find it. In particular I am having a problem with ALL addresses and IP's being logged everytime I go on the internet. ... Hang on... its stopped... I upgraded Ad-Aware (Available from http://www.lavasoft.nu/ and it looks like it found the problem...
Anyway I would still be interested in a site which gives information about built in spyware.
ALL addresses and IP's being logged everytime I go on the internet
Logged and done what with?
The only spyware in XP is with Media Player logging what you play and sending it back.
Just use a firewall i suggest ZA Pro(if you dont have a hardware one), it blocks pop ups as well.
Use WebWasher to clean all your temp files every so often.
Run Ad Aware every so often.
Turn off everything in Media Player and do not upgrade to 9. Better still dont use Media Player for anything.
Turn off the Automagic update crap.
Turn off the error reporting when something crashes.
I have a firewall on. Its Kerio. I went abit mad and blocked everything. Now only DNS is allowed and some programs have been allowed to access the internet.
this is a bit OT - but here's some great info on all the services xp runs. not sure if they qualify as spyware or potential security problems (well, its m$, so let's assume they do ), but most of them are definitely useless memory hogs for the average home user.
At least make constructive posts if your going to reply or don't post at all. This question is totally welcome here and the original thread started asked for all suggestions or answers except what you replied with.
just out of curosity, as i'm new to linux use, is there an equivalent to ad-aware/spybot for linux?
i know most of the spyware issues are related to I.E. but surely some (like cookies) are just as relevant whatever browser you use, winduhz or linux...
Check your browser's options, they're often much better than I.E.
I think you'll find that due to the linux user and permission system, you have far less to worry about wrt spyware and virii, as long as your sensible.
I'll start having a good poke around the settings once i get some hardware issues sorted, proud, using konqueror and mozilla, ATM will give opera a go soon.....
OT bit now...
Proud- I was over in Ringwood on monday doing some work....
love that old thumper!
