http://www.bb4win.org/news.php

I've tried once and it works just fine ^_^

which one is the actual desktop replacment , is it bblean ?
there are lots of "bb plugins" , not sure which one is the desktop ...

i would like to try it ...

Mega Man X 07-30-2005 07:59 AM

Actually, by the looks of it, all of them are desktops (BBLean, Xoblite, Bluebox and BB4Win). Pretty much like fluxbox or openbox in Linux. They are clones of blackbox, but still different ^_^. I remember running bb4win a while ago if my memory does not fail me =)

That's totally up to the company doing the game and using the install shield then a MS issue. And I'm still about to see one single game that does not have the option "customize" where you can actually choose the path to install the game...
My Point, Megaman X, is that I have to go out of my way to set up a windows system in a manner that makes sense. I don't think Windows is a terrible OS but it seems like I have to do a lot more work to get a Windows system set up the way I like it. In Linux, I still have to customize things to my liking, but I have the freedom to do that and I don't need to download additional software or go out of my way to do it.

Mega Man X 07-30-2005 08:27 AM

That's true. Windows needs to be easier to customize. I think that the Powertoys helps a lot though. And any distribution out there, aimed for the desktop, offers way more things then a full install of WinXP ( which includes a web browser and a crappy text editor ). Point taken ;)

Chromezero 07-30-2005 08:41 AM

I have to admit, I've never used the Powertoys, atleast not in Windows.:D I'll have to check it out though. It sounds like it my be a solution for when I HAVE to use windows.

Cann't miss this statement...

This is a Linux forum, and we're talking about tweaking 'doze...

I was disappointed with the multiple screens from Powertoys - Alt-tab brings the window to the current screen, instead of taking you to the window's own screen.

This makes it all but impossible to keep windows discreet when using the typical way to move between windows. Bit of a let-down to me. . .

I've mine on D:\docs, D:\media and etc. If you want to keep the same behavior that, for example, "My Music" has to "D:\media", simply right click on the media folder, choose properties then "Customize", then change the behavior under "What kind of folder to you want".

* You can use a third part application as Total Commander for that task. I've not found any free replacement for that one yet, but I'm trying to write one myself, for fun ^_^.

* Both winrar and winzip works with me on Explorer. I simply right click on a .rar file and choose extract.

* Registries are bad, but using a free tool as "Registry Cleaner" from Pal Solutions you will keep your registries in a very good shape.

Regards!

* I know the way you can replace target directories for My Documents, My Music, etc., I ment the concept behind it

*I have been using TC for a long time now, and I'm sure many others do, that's why I said that a Commander-like Explorer would please me, eliminating the need of third-party software

*But can you double-click on a archived file (or press Enter) and see the contents of it, just like TC allows you to (thanks to its internal zip packer and other plugins)? Also winrar/winzip are 3rd party software, and this is a Windows wishlist, meaning out of the box functionality

*I never trusted registry cleaners; they are intended to do good but they might just delete something you actually need; it happened to me and I won't use such things again

I know pretty well how to customize a Windows install, I've been using Win since 3.1, but there are things that, even if they can be easily tweaked/fixed by hand or with 3rd party software, I feel they shouldn't be there in the first place.

microsoft won't do anything to make the next windows any good, all microsoft cares about is that aero theme or whatever, they won't make anything better than xp, not like xp is any good.

they're going to have a stupid new winfs filesystem, dos is dos, they haven't fixed anything in...

Windows 3 *
Windows 95 *
Windows 98 *
Windows 98 se *
Windows me *
Windows 2000 *
Windows xp *

so what makes you think they will in longhorn, the interface in windows has also always been ugly too.

one thing they will manage to do in longhorn is raise the minimum requirements by over triple :-p

yeah everyone knows MS didn't changed anythign ebtween all those OS'es.

Windows 2000 was based off of NT 4.0 not Windows 98 and that dos is in neither Windows 2000 or XP except as a command box but the OS does not run off of it.

1) How is My Documents different then Home?

2) I would love to see a more robust explorer.....From my use of Vista they did change it a lot to make it easier to sort files.

3) ZIP files are supported in Windows XP out of the box in fact you cn double click it and it acts like another folder where you can cut and copy and paste files

4) I know the registry is being phased out according to MS....bout time too....who knows how long that will take though

5) Yeah I hear yah on that one theme support is lack luster and everythign I wanna change I typically need to hack or get a third party program.

Anybody that starts these threads might as well write it in l337. I am so sick of this, Microsoft doesn't care anymore, even single share holders are more than well off. There are tons and tons of these threads all over the net.

Damn....
