"If you register the player online, which involves answering some very personal questions and effectively allowing Microsoft a good look at your PC, then you get the full version. Otherwise you're left with a cut down version.
"If they applied this tactic to Linux users, imagine the information they could get their hands on."
I doubt most linux users would even touch windows media player. never mind allow MS access to their PC.
Lol, can you imagine that? Hey everyone! Why don't we let MS screw up linux?? YAY! Let's allow a company FAMOUS for it's security flaws integrate itself with a security POWERHOUSE!
Isn't Windows XP (or maybe it is 200) Embedded supposed to be the next big thing for ms to try to get into set top boxes? Traditionally, MS would keep their stuff off of other people's os'es because they wanted them to stick to the MS Windows OS. They must be afraid of linux knocking at their bottom line and are trying to get a dime from the embedded linux devices sold.
I'm trying to get Windows Media Player to run via wine so I can listen to "Hate Radio" via chaincast streaming... which the mighty Mplayer does not support. So, wmp is not completely useless to me yet.
