I've got an irritating problem in Windows 98 that I was hoping someone might have encountered. I'm trying to attach a MIDI controller to my IBM Aptiva, which has SoundMAX sound. The controller's MIDI cable has a 15-pin plug, which is supposed to go into the joystick/MIDI port on the soundcard. The controller needs a Roland MPU-401 compatible driver, which Windows claims is installed and running. This driver doesn't actually seem to be driving anything, though. However, none of my programs are receiving any MIDI input, and I can't find any place in Windows for setting MIDI input (lots for output, though). Does my computer think the MIDI controller is a joystick? How do I tell it to go find MIDI input at the soundcard port? I read somewhere that Aptivas come with the MIDI disabled, and that one might press F1 during boot-up to get to the Setup Utility to enable it. I saw nothing referring specifically to MIDI, but it did tell me that MPU-401 is enabled.
Please, please help me, someone!
How about DirectX setup, it was a while when I last time used Windows95/98/Me/XP + I understand there is no windowsquestions.org dedicated to windows (it points right here ), but I think you are better off asking this sort of questions at MS boards, I don't know the names though
From my understanding, DirectX is for playing MIDI sounds for games, etc. I'm concerned with MIDI input---the output (through the synth in my computer) is working just fine. THe problem seems to be that the computer doesn't know the keyboard (it's not a synth, just a controller) is there. I also tried this in my Linux partition, and it didn't work there, either. Unfortunately, the program I need to use will run only under UWIN in the Windows partition.
I've tried re-installing drivers, wandering around the BIOS, swearing loudly, etc., and I haven't a clue what to do next.
