win95 install...

if i want to install win95 over do i need to fdisk again or can i just run setup from the gui or from DOS?

jharris 07-23-2001 05:37 AM

You don't need to fdisk as you've already got a valid file systems then. I'd advise you remove your Windows directory and your Program Files directory first though, or format... Strange question for a Linux forum mind you... If you've got Linux on the same box the Windows installation will trash LILO so you'll need a boot disk to get your system back.

win95 question...

ok if i remove programs and windows (directories) and keep MY Documents then I will be able to do a new install and keep all of my personal stuff? is that correct?

the reason i ask is that my wife (she who must be obeyed) insists i keep some version of a microsoft product operable on the hard drive as i have already tried to go WIN-less in the past...

of course, even win95 (my opinion: the best windows at the present) must be flushed and recreated at one point or another...

thanks for the help!

Ghost it

I know exaclt what you mean when you say

To solve that I have I have two windows partitions on my HDD, one is for the Win98 and the other is for my programs and data.

I installed Windows 98, updated it with all security patches etc, I installed all of my programs onto the second partition and then created a ghost image of the first partition.

I keep the ghost image on the second partition and when Windows starts playing up I just dump the ghost image onto the first partition. It takes about 5 minutes and I have everything exactly as I want it.

Yeah - by removing those directories you are basically doing a clean install of Windows then. The other nice thing is that if you have installed programs that are not in program files and you want to reinstall those programs most installers will only replace the missing files in the Windows dirs - hence the install is quite a bit faster.

I will let Jeremy answer that one but I do believe he owns it. Pretty clever I think.
