The term virus is an entirely valid one for a SPECIFIC TYPE of rogue program - one which is placed inside another program or data file, and when run by a user, places itself inside other files. The behaviour is indeed similar to a biological virus; a few computer viruses are even programmed with the capability to evolve.

However, it should not be used, as it so commonly is, to refer to any rogue program.
