Widows 7 notepad view->status bar

At work I have to use M$ Win 7. Yesterday I got a Widows update, now in notepad "view->status bar" option is grayed out. I read online that this is a "feature" and you have to hack the registry to get the option back. How does Microsoft come up with this crap!
