Why Linux sucks - Merely an Opinion

(removed)

Don't take it seriously, because it's written in an immature way. When you read it, read between the lines. And do not check this link with Internet Explorer because I've blocked Internet Explorer completely. Most of you Linux users don't use IE anyway, but I'm talking about the Windows users who hang here.

After you've read it, discuss it. I want to know if you agree/disagree with the arguments I've made.

Spikeles 01-23-2006 09:43 PM

Here's my opinions.

Quote:

Just face it: Linux isn't user friendly.
True, Linux for a long time has only been the realm for geeks. It's only now just starting to begin the translation to User Friendly ideals.

Quote:

Seriously, wake up to reality and get it through your thick skulls that it's ridiculous; it looks so damn unprofessional and absolutely not serious, as if it was some cheap operating system from an episode of Star Trek or something. These names are really lame and unimaginative.
I don't really agree with this. There are plenty of examples in Windows that are just as "goofy" as some of these.

Quote:

You give them a suggestion of something that could be done better in your opinion, and they go: "SHUT UP! THIS CAN'T BE DONE! I KNOW BETTER THAN YOU! I DO THIS FOR FREE!"...
Hmm. My experience is that they are usually pretty helpful and take most comments seriously.

Quote:

Nobody wants to sit for hours and compile some media player like VLC. Nobody wants to compile their software to begin with.
I'd have to agree. My mother for example certainly dosn't want to do this. Bust most distros provide generic binary packages, even Gentoo which is at it's best if compiled from source has binary packages. For example, i use the pre-compiled binary packages for OpenOffice.

Quote:

Get yourselves a functional de facto standard for setup files which works on every Linux distro (not just a few of them, I really mean ALL of them
I believe there is a push towards that. I can't think of the name right now.

Quote:

so why go through all the hassle of dependency hell and loads of other shit
This isn't a Linux specific issue. Even windows has these issues, it's just called a different name: "DLL hell". It's the same thing. The thing with most Windows apps is that they include the DLL's when you install the software.

Quote:

OF, SHIT!!!... Nobody likes Linux. If they did, they'd use it. But they don't because it sucks ass.
Wrong. People don't not use Linux because it's crap, i've found people don't use it because they don't KNOW about it. I have NEVER seen an advertisment for Linux on TV. But when was the last time you saw a Microsoft AD? Yesterday?

Quote:

“My name is Linus, and I am your god.” [2]

You're nothing; you're just an idiot, and your tiny OS percentage share proves that you're not even close at being omniscient/omnipotent. In other words: shut the hell up!
Geez.. at least read the details about that qoute:

My name is Linus, and I am your god." (1998)
Source: at the Linux Expo, Durham, North Carolina
Notes: Linus explains it in Just For Fun that it was just a joke - an irony, because he never felt confortable about people standing up and clapping before he even said anything at presentations.

Quote:

command–line is so in the past; GUI is the future.
This is a user preference. I like the way Linux allows the use of either where Microsoft has just about killed of the Command Line all together. Some things can be done faster in command-line than in GUI. Although in Linux with a proper Desktop Environment you never even have to see the command-line so it's not a requirement to use the command-line.

BaltikaTroika 01-23-2006 09:48 PM

Why would we want to start a discussion with an obvious troll?

Baltika

Spikeles 01-23-2006 09:56 PM

At least he/she/it admitted it was:
Quote:

Don't take it seriously, because it's written in an immature way
Doesn't that count for anything?

Centinul 01-23-2006 10:06 PM

Well I must say that I do not agree with your "arguments" that you presented in this "work." You do admit that it was written in an immature way (and I agree whole-heartedly), but if there was a point that you wanted to get across I think it was clouded by the poor style and organization of the document.

Quote:

except for the fact that it couldn't properly detect my IP address settings. That did it for me, it meant no Internet, and bye–bye to Fedora Core 4
Why give up so fast on this small issue. If your network setup was configured for anything other than DHCP windows internet wouldn't have worked either. None of the OS's can automagically detect that you need DHCP or static IP or something else that is the users responsibility in my opinion.

Quote:

You think that your precious Linux distro doesn't come with flaws? That's such a typical behaviour of you die–hard Linux fans to believe that your holy kernel is untarnished and immortality itself.
There are always fanboys with respect to anything that has more than one side. There are ATI fanboys, NVIDIA fan boys as well as MS and Linux fanboys. You claim that it is "typical" behaviour that linux fans believe that nothing is wrong with linux. I completely disagree. If every linux geek thought linux was perfect why would they spend time improving it? It doesn't make sense to me.

Quote:

I ran Linux distros (Xandros and Mandrake) for around 7 months straight, and they never had the same issue. Just face it: Linux isn't user friendly.
You contradict yourself here. You say that you ran Xandros and Mandrake for 7 months without issues (which implies user friendliness, based on your argument) then you turn around and say that linux isn't user friendly. The "user friendliness" of linux is distribution dependent and as you mentioned it varies. If you want a no hassle distro stick with the distros that you didn't have problems with or try some of the other well known "user friendly" distros.

Quote:

Trust me, no one wants to compile from source. Geek label on that.
How can you jump to that conclusion? If no one wanted to compile things from source then metadistributions like Gentoo (and I'm sure there are others) wouldn't even exist. Again the great thing about open source is that you can choose a distribution where you would not have to do that. Yes I'll admit sometimes you might have to but that's part of life. Get used to it.

Code:

As Linux is right now, you'll never harbour more users: it's too damn unattractive. Linux cannot conquer and rule the world like this. Get your act together, code your Linux distros better, then bust and beat Microsoft's ass altogether until they all start eating shit forever.
The fact that you think linux is unattractive is YOUR point of view. The goal of Linux (and open source in general) is not to "conquer and rule the world" and not to "bust and beat Microsoft's ass". In my opinion the goal of linux and the open source community is to provide another alternative for those that want to try.

I promise I'm almost done (just bored infact), 2 more things:

Quote:

n spite of having more than 15 years of development, Linux isn't even close to the success of Firefox—they're both free and open source, so there's no real or valid excuse for such a shitty performance.
Quote:

Case in point: I know that Linux and Firefox aren't competing in the same area. Hell, they're not even competitors to begin with—but let me tell you why Firefox became successful: it's not difficult to use.
I'm glad you atleast mentioned that Linux and Firefox are not competing in the same area because I believe others would have had a field day with this. This completely invalidates your argument though. There is no use comparing something when they aren't on the same level. Firefox is a browser and has a much more specific scope then linux (and windows) saying that one is simpler to use is not fair because the OS itself (linux and windows) is much more complicated then clicking and browsing websites.

Quote:

I understand that it's higly revolutionary for you morons to do things with the use of a simple GUI. After all, you want to sustain your daily need of feeling like superiorly advanced, and intelligent hackers by doing everything via command–lines, right you morons? Come on, enough with this horseshit already, stop behaving like the retards you are and evolve a little: command–line is so in the past; GUI is the future.
Again, the use of a GUI is personal preference. This is what makes the open source (linux specific) community so great. There are many ways to accomplish the same task. You want a completely GUI interface, go use KDE. If you want command-line use command-line. No one is forced to use one of the other (not as much freedom in windows) and some infact (me for instance) use both. This freedom is why some people come into the open source community.

Well that is all I have for now. Please don't label me as some sort of linux fanboy I'm just trying to comment on what I thought about your article. I'll admit that I probably read too much into it but I couldn't help it :). I was actually an extensive windows user up until about 7 months ago until I switched over. All I can say is "to each his own" if you like windows use windows, if you like linux use linux. If you don't like either then find something else, that is the beauty of freedom. Choose what you like! Enjoy! :twocents:

when microsoft can set its own standards and make people migrate to theirs, then why not linux. linux has its own naming conventions and its own ideology. u cant say why, it just has to be a certain. one cannot expect linux to ape windows becoz if it did then wats the point of coming up with a new OS.

regarding the software being complied from source, i have to agree that its not the most efficient way of doing it. but wat other option is there. i mean linux is available as 50 different distros. now u cannot hope that the programmer compiles a software for 50 different versions. that will be insane.

yes linux has a long way before being accepted as a desktop OS. this is only becoz Windows has a greater hold on the users. users are apprehensive when told to shift to a different OS.

but the bottomline is that linux is the future.

mokele 01-24-2006 05:08 AM

You seem to know every "crap" we say to all trolls
so, why bother. We are going to say the same things
to you. You don't like M$, you don't like Linux, you
don't want anyone to tell you this, that, or the other

Well turn off the damn PC and troll (whine) around with
your parents.

I know you took your time to put that page together. But...
A better text would have been: "

"I don't like M$, I don'tlike linux, thanks" .END.

There, no more text. Straight message (without the whining)

and the epilogue. Which in my opinion is the only
serious thing you have put there.

Any way here goes the crap. I think M$ support at least
is going to give you the satisfaction of ignoring you,
so go write to them developers and you'll feel better
because you won't hear a reaply from them telling you, you
are an incompetent troll. -You paid for this right-
~I suppose~

Aaaaand. I if you don't like Linux.. stick with the damn
windoze

There. I said the "crap" anyways If you don't like it
go troll with you moms.

At least when *I* write a rant, I don't think that saying "It's written in an immature way but just ignore that" is going to help any :)

I can see it saving a lot of time, tho, so I'll use your approach in this way:

You're talking rubbish (I know that leaves a lot of well-informed arguments out, but just ignore that & read between the lines, yeah?)

baldy3105 01-24-2006 05:44 AM

I'm sorry, you appear to be here under a misapprehension. Linux is an operating system designed for the use of human
beings, so you're not qualified to start with. Its no wonder you couldn't get it working.

Best you stick to scratching your ass and eating banana's.

EliasAlucard 01-24-2006 06:39 AM

Guys... you're taking that article way too seriously. To begin with, I'm not a troll. My entire website is immature--not because I actually am, but just because I enjoy writing like that.

As for the Linux article... don't you think that there's at least some truth in it? I mean, Linux is not really getting anywhere fast, and there's a good reason for that: it's difficult.
Quote:

one cannot expect linux to ape windows becoz if it did then wats the point of coming up with a new OS.
But Linux does already "ape" Windows in a lot of ways. Here's a few examples: XMMS, KDE, WINE etc. The entire distro Xandros is imitating Windows. And many other distros are as well.

Why are you feeling so offended by that article by the way? If you checked my FAQ, you would've read that I'm just doing this for practise.

oneandoneis2 01-24-2006 06:44 AM

Look up "convergent evolution" before you accuse Linux of copying Windows. It's blatantly untrue to say that Microsoft thought up the features we today consider to be "Windows-like"

Like I said: it's just practise; I don't really care if anyone reads it (I thought that was obvious since I've blocked IE and thereby 90% of the world).

Yes, it takes inspiration from Maddox to some extent. But I'm not really trying to be like him because it's just practise for my novel (it won't be anything like my site). There are still some stuff I need to practise on with my writing...

You would need to be a LOT more intelligent than you are to offend me, sunshine. I'm just mildly amused...

I'm perfectly happy to acknowledge Linux's shortcomings, but when a pillock like you with obviously no knowledge of the history of either Linux or Windows broadsides it with an asshole statement like "it sucks", I can't help but feel pity for you. Yeah, and compiling from source isn't really difficult on Linux (Fedora Core 4 had great support for this), but the problem with Linux is that most distros (at least the ones I've tried) lack all the dependencies needed.

Sure, Microsoft has more advertising in their OS. My entire point was that Linux is too difficult, and something needs to be done about this. That's also why I'm excited about the new distro Symphony OS.

If that doesn't tell you how much I'm not serious about it... then I don't know what does.

PatrickMay16 01-24-2006 07:51 AM

Come on, guys. Can't you see that this article by Mr Alucard here is very jokey? There seem to be some parts where he was speaking half of what really is his opinion (although maybe highly exagerrated), but the rest is just jokes.

Like he says, you're all taking it far too seriously. I suggest you read it again, but try to interpret it as a joke. You know, as if it were like one of those "Windows isn't ready for the desktop either" articles, if you get what I mean.

Myself, I found this article to be enjoyable.

EDIT: Just fixed a few mistakes I made.

Well actually, since you don't actually block IE and just redirect to a porn site, I've just notified the Admin of this site to remove all links to your site, including your signature. This is clearly against our rules. If you want to remove these links yourself, I would highly suggest doing so now. If not, we can just ban you from using this site.

Got a problem with our rules, take it up with the administrator.

EliasAlucard, the problem here certainly isn't that you blocked IE...but that you redirect it to a porn site. Linking to porn is for obvious reasons against the rules here at LQ. What was asked of you by the moderators was one of two things - either remove the porn redirect or not link to your site from LQ. I think that's fair. While I can appreciate that you may have written the article in jest, starting a thread with "Why Linux sucks" in the title at a Linux site is asking for a flamefest. The fact that my post will be number forty and Godwin's Law has not been invoked is actually impressive IMHO and indicative of the high quality of the average LQ member. I'm closing this thread for obvious reasons. If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.
