Why does my internet connection keep disconnecting?

I'm using Rhine II Fast Ethernet adaptor.I have a wireless connection at home but my computer is connected directly to the adaptor.(sorry if i cant get the correct terms,i not well-versed in coms).
My internet keep disconnecting every now and then and it pisses me off. I try changing a new cable but the problem persists.

Does switching off my modem when i'm not using it helpful to this problem?

Do i have to reboot my computer?

Help me plzz!

By any chance is the modem used heavily? I have a similar problem with my cheapy d-link modem, After hours of heavy downloading, the connection will cut out randomly. The solution for me seems to be turning off the router & modem for about 30 mins then everything is back to normal. I do notice that the modem is extremely hot when I do this, may well be the cause of the problem...but you get what you pay for...

Cable modem?
DSL?
Router?
Please describe the complete configuration.
When it disconnects, is it just one computer or the whole network? Does it come back on automatically?

i used a cable modem. My internet connection still shows that i'm connected to the internet, but i cant surf the web and my msn will be disconnected. Only my computer which is connected directly to the modem experience such a problem. My laptop which connects through wireless does not experience such a problem at all. I have to plug out the lan cable and plug it back in for the connection to work again. It's tiring.

Once again, please describe the complete configuration.
Where does the wireless come from? EG--do you have a router with both wireless and ethernet connections?
I assume that the basic cable connection is DHCP. Is the wireless to the laptop also DHCP? The hardwired computer?
