That's my main reason, but another reason is I'm a big fan of the unix philosophy. Linux and Unix will always be my favorite OSs to use.

I've already posted to this thread, but I feel the need to do it again for my own affirmation and perhaps yours.

I haven't used Winblows since 2006 until just a few days ago. I just bought a Acer Aspire One netbook that came with Winblows on it. I figured, ok fine, maybe it will be OK to spare 20G of the 160G hd for it and dual boot to Fedora. It seriously took me 3 hours to initialize the OEM install, update it, and then remove the TONS of crap that was pre-loaded.

I was so pissed at the end of it, but then, like the hand of Buddha coming down out of the sky and touching me on my forehead, my enlightenment soothed me and made me smile.

Yes, I have my Linux. I dont need WinBlows in any fashion for any means. It's just there because I allow it to exist. My comfort with Linux has been attained and I am peaceful.

haha. yes, indeed it was... but even after uninstalling the kitchen sink applications I've still only got 7G free now. I figured I'd a little extra room for all those future security patches.

It was back in 2002 i think. I had an old computer, pentium 2, 333MHz(?). I used primarily NT4.0 ws on it. I used 2000 for a while as well, but it was somewhat slow. Some day for some reason, I got really pissed. I'm guessing it had something to do with NT4.0 not being supported by third party hw/sw anymore. I can't remember exactly why, but it was something screwy with windows (of course). I friend of mine had been a slacker since 97 or so, and I thought that I would give it a try, and I got some really good help from him the following year. Since I've always been a fan of kiss (Hence NT4.0) I really enjoyed slackware. Now I'm really glad that windows fsck-it for me

As my option is not up there ill post it here. I was tired of supporting MS windows (2k server/desktop/XP) at the time due to major crashes and hours upon hours of dealing with viruses and spy/mal/addware on desktops and servers. SP4 rollup for win2k server is what pushed me over the edge.

I was supporting 2 small businesses, not including my own, each with less then 20 end users and having either 1 or 2 win2k servers. Nothing fancy, but still enough to take several hours a week of remote access to maintain and keep running smoothly. between 2-4 hours a night just cleaning up spy/mal/addware on the workstations and scanning the network for viruses.

convincing them to STOP using IE and to start using FF was a GREAT step in reducing that from 6-8hrs per network down to 2-4 hours.

When SP4 rollup came out it killed every single server with NTKERNEL.EXE blue screen errors. the backups did not work and the systems could not be restored. In 1 weekend I had to rebuild every single network before Monday morning when the customers came in to start their normal work day... That was one hell of a long weekend and the end of my personal use of MS for anything that I had to support.

I started looking into Linux. This was back when RH9 was out and FC1 was just in beta but about to replace RH9. My biggest challenge was to find a FOSS account software package that was equivalent to QuickBooks Pro, not Quicken. I tried a few and found one that I liked, but the wife hated it. She does not handle change well.

I told her buy me a MAC or deal with the Linux solution I had found. She bought me a MAC. I love my mac and I still enjoy and prefer Linux to anything MS has even Windows 7, and 7 is a huge jump in many good ways for MS, but my main desktop is a MAC with CentOS 5.x as my NFS server at the house all protected with IPCop.

my web/e-mail server is also CentOS 5.x and it just works. I love Linux, but I am sadly disappointed with the current status of the default installation of the Linux desktop atm.

my studies.And it also helps me to learn about computer hardware and the kernel itself.
