On the one hand, I am slowly working my way through the issues involved in installing Mandrake 10 Community on my laptop; and realising that a newbie would have no chance at all of getting it working (I had to start hacking around with kernel files to get the initial upgrade to complete, for example). Looking at KDE 3.2, it still looks horribly confusing - I've been using KDE daily for well over a year and I still can't remember where all the configuration settings are. Linux still has a way to go before it gets to the point that it isn't very frustrating for the non-technical user.
On the other hand, I just got back from my parents' house, where I spent 4 hours saving their files from a computer infected with MyDoom-E (which helpfully deletes random Word documents). Using Knoppix, a USB key and my Mandrake laptop as well as a file recovery utility, I was at least able to save most of the files and, when the computer is disinfected, they should be back safe and sound.
that's why I'm trying to find another hobby. I've already moved away from computer gaming to console gaming, so I spend less time with configuring things. Now I'm about to buy a guitar, play a few songs and... that's it. Too much waste of time

Is that you singing, or playing the guitar??
lol, ghehe. I wish. Maybe someday I could play or sing, or maybe even both...ghaha. Right now the two things I am trying to do is to configure my printer with abiword
Well any OS can suck if you let it. I am a member of Apple discussions and a local Mac user group, and they have problems too. The thing is you have to care for any OS to keep it running happy. If you remind your parents to never open an attachment to an unfamiliar e-mail, they shouldn't get any more of that awful doom POS. Or they can subscribe to anti virus like AVG free and dispense with any future virus.

Unfortunately, my parents were doing things pretty much right. They have an up-to-date virus checker (which found it, but can't easily disinfect : no one seems to have an easy fix for MyDoom E), a firewall and they're pretty sure they didn't click on an email file (though they might just not remember). Possible infection route was through a bulletin board-type program they have.

Actually I should have mentioned that some (possibly doomE) are compressed, which renders virus scan irrelevant. There is a fix for that lately.
This one is cooler. It's a music video with a guy telling how it was before any Operating Sytem came out and why everything since Apple 1.0 sucks, including MacOS, Windows and Linux . A must see
