which distro is better for inkscape?

I want to edit some SVG with lots of nodes using inkscape. However, it is VERY SLOW on OSX (v0.43), ubuntu-ppc(v.0.42) and windows XP(v0.43). It seems that the v.40 come with ubuntu hoary is a bit faster(but buggy).

I would like to know what is a good distro for inkscape? I don't like to compile overnight, so I hope that the system is already take some optimations from 686 CPU. Mine is a cheap 2G sempron CPU.

Is 686+ packages recommended for inkscape?
