In my opinion you should take up whatever you enjoy doing (or at least has your interest). Having a high salary only partially compensates for work that you don't enjoy.

As payout is important to you, read the recruitment ads in newspapers or on the internet, see what's best paid, read up on what it's about (what the role of eg a DBA) and do the relevant courses.

when i was in college my favorite courses were:
micro processors (machine code for wdc-65c02 and m68k)
micro devices (boolean logic using motorolas n-series ic's)
operating systems programming (labs like my-ls, my-shell, dining philosophers server, ...)

your milage may vary.
____________

also why do you want to take advance courses if you're a newbie ?
how 'bout you start with intro courses then choose the track you want to develop more in.
