Where you got your computers?
 

I hope this is the right place to post this if not chould a admin move it thanks. I was just wondering where everyone on on here got there computers. I got my first computer off a freind for 50 bucks it was a old 233 about 4 yrs ago i got it my second computer i got a got from a diffrent freind that crashed it so i bought it from him also for 50 bucks 533 and just put slackware on it and works fine. And my newest computer i got i got from my dad it is a amd 1.0 he gave to me for building him a new computer so he chould play doom 3 on. lol I am now trying to find a labtop nothing great just a older one so if i am downstarts or something i can still connect to the internet and so but i am not sure where i should look for one. I wish i had the moeny to buy a new one but i dont so i just am looking for like a 333-500 proccesor. Post where you guys have found your computers and deals you got on them below.

well..not quite the place to talk about computer deals.. but .. just to brag about.. i have a PII 400Mgz Celeron form hell :) which i bought 7 year ago.. and guess what.. next month it's time for a brand new Sempron :)

Got mine (Pentium III 560 MHz or close) for about $200 at a used-computer shop. Love it (despite problems with installations--not the computer's fault).

My first computer was a Commodore 64 back in about 1980! That didn't last long--sold it to a coworker who actually did interesting things with it.

Then I had a couple of Atari machines that I laboriously programmed stuff for. It was fun and challenging for the most part.

Then the big move up to a Tandy 100. Wow! Impressive... For the first time I got online to some bulletin boards. A 300-bps modem.

After that, a Vendex whatever-888 processor machine, the first real PC clone I had. It cost close to $900 and didn't even have a hard drive. I got a hard drive card (hard drive that fits in a card slot) put in it for ample extra dollars; a gigantic 20-Mb (mega, not giga) capacity. I felt powerful and elegant.

Got a lot of good use out of that, too, and wrote some nifty GWBasic programs both for home and the office.

Then concurrent with various laptops I got an eMachine that is at this moment sitting forlornly behind me on the floor. The first color display and Windows-equipped desktop I had. I think it was around $500 and that was in 1998, if memory serves correctly. I got it because I wanted to keep up with a friend who'd just acquired one of the original iMac's....

That put me on the internet.

When I got DSL service I found out to my chagrin that the eMachine couldn't handle it; I was locked into a contract; I went and bought my present computer. Then the Windows installed on it got fouled up, I paid for an upgrade to XP, only to discover that Microsoft won't upgrade an OEM installation, only a full version from them (how many people in the world even have such a thing?!)--and of course you can't return software. I was effectively conned out of $100 there, in my opinion. I swore never to use Windows again and I've kept my word. I installed Mandrake 8.0 on the new computer and have been using Mandrake since.

Although this is an interesting question, it's better suited for the General forum. That being said, my first PC was a blazing Pentium 133 with 16Mg RAM and a 1.6G drive. Bought it from Micron in 1996. -- J.W.

Ok, I got my first computer form Best buy? It is an AMD 500mhz compaq :(
My second computer I bought the parts off a few diffrent friends, AMD 2100+,
My 3rd computer I got mostly for free from some guy at work, minus the sound card and the nic.
My 4th computer I bought for $75 buck off a second hand store. I got duped it claimed to be an 400mhz computer, however it was not exactly that, it had an emulation chip on it that made it run at 400mhz but it was still running on a P133 bus.

one will run SME 6.0 ( server ) the other dual boot

my motto : why buy new when you can buy 4 or 5 second hand, unless you're a gamer of course, ... it suits my business purposes.

I got a bunch of old ones my old high school was going to throw away. Nice 200 and 300 Mhz machines with 128MB of Ram :)

My first one was an old 386 running Windows 3.1 in 1995. That got stolen, so next was the Gateway Pentium 233 running Windows 95. I eventually built my own a few years ago, and that's what I'm using now. An AMD Athlon 2000+.

I gots 3 computers. The laptop is a Toshiba which runs Windows XP since my girlfriend is the only one that uses it. Bought that at BestBuy about 16 months ago.

Then I got a 500mhz Celeron box that my friend gave to me for a motherboard. Its my home server.

Then I got my main box which I built myself. Picture here.

Apart from my laptop which is branded
and my mail server (also branded) which I retired from my workplace,, and then resurected at home.

I build my own.... OR my talented 9 year old son builds them for me.........

first computer was an athlon 1GHz from MESH for about £900 in about 2000, my second and third were given to me for updating other's computers and were a cyrix III 700MHz on a PC-CHIPS motherboard - thats given up the ghost completely and a PIII 1GHz on a gateway mainboard - currently my server, my main machine is an athlon64 2800+ on an msi mainboard, the board was given to me, I think I spent about £300 on that inc a 19" CRT monitor. thats about it, prior to my first computer I used my father's

Maybe you have just forgotten to click 'submit'? I know nothing about any deleted post recently.

I'm with Mara on this, first of all, only the site admin can actually delete any posts or threads as mods do not have this capability. Secondly, we never delete posts or threads unless its an extreme or rare case in which most of the time the mods along with Jeremy take a vote to actually remove it.

I've had very rare occasions on this board and some others where I did click but my post never registered. I imagine that can be plenty of reasons for this along the many hops that a transmission takes to get to the destination.

The solution for me has been to wait several minutes and if it's still not there, try again. Always give quite a bit of time to avoid double-posting in the same thread. That's the approach I take...for what it's worth.

i was just wondering if it was something with the server.

I started with an Amstrad PCW, whic I bought 2nd hand. Then I bought a new 486-sx something or other from an electrical retailer that was going bust. It was cheap and ran Win 3.1. It was a waste of time and money but whetted my appetite for computers.

Currently I have a bespoke AMD box (bespoke in the sense that I built it myself and it was cheap ;) ) , a server which was given to me by a builder (a nice Compaq Presario 5420), a HP Omnibook XE3 bought for me by my employer and a Toshiba Satellite 220CS (p133 48mb - my current box of choice because it's soooooo solid. And it's got Debian on it!!!) that I have brought back from the dead. I didn't pay for this one. I also have the makings of another box (AMD-k2) in various drawers and boxes around the house.

I am currently trying not to buy a Thinkpad T21 because I'm not sure if £299 is a good price. :)

Remember if you buy a Thinkpad and are considering using lm_sensors with it, to read the warning in the man page for "sensors-detect." They strongly advise not running sensors-detect on a Thinkpad.

I always kind of wanted a Thinkpad, but now that I'm a Linux-ite, I probably would never succeed in making it work with Linux, so I just stick to my custom-built desktop, which suits me OK.
