What's the latest tech? Ideas for HS newspaper article?
I'm the tech editor @ my H.S. newspaper.
Anyway, I'm looking for article ideas. Its pretty open, anything relating to technology, but something that would be of interest to high school students ....
If you have any ideas post here or email me at jayp314 (at) gmail.com.
Thank you in advance.

How About...
An article on fishing online forums to get people to do your work for you (against the forum rules, of course) and getting slammed, canned, and otherwise spammed by people that have read the stickies?

hey now, that's a little bit harsh, don't you think? He's asking for ideas, not for you to write the article. He's asking for subject matter, not a finished project.
htmlishard: personally, as a senior in HS, I'm interested in all things open source, as well as digital rights(eff and so forth). Granted, I'm not your run of the mill High School student. What about something like a basic intro to linux? Also, providing some more information as to what kind of tech column it is might help.

Now that sounds like an enthralling article.
Uninspired Journalist Struck Down!!!
Yesterday, htmlishard narrowly escaped a thread explosion that would've costed him dignity. It is reported several commenters joined in on the conflaguration. Known only by their aliases, most of them escape unscathed. Although it is believed the flames were the result of an arsonist, no flamers were taken in custody. Luckily htmlishard, was saved by an understanding and empathic individual.
htmlishard Interview continued page 6A
----------------------------------------------------------
Reporter: How would you describe your near death experience?
htmlishard: Well for a while I thought I had it pretty bad, but then this guy who called himself microsoft/linux came in.
Reporter: Microsoft/linux?
htmlishard: I know its a bit of a confusing name, but thanks to him I'm still here sitting and talking to you.
Reporter: Is it true the incident occured while you were attempting procur an article from LQ?
htmlishard: Well... I was only .. ah (speakers pause for a long moment) gathering ideas.
Reporter: How did you and microsoft/linux manage to escape?
htmlishard: I was with microsoft/linux and he managed to find a rather fortititous backdoor. I was shocked. At first I thought I was all alone.
Reporter: Do you think this incident might have been preventable? With a goolge search, perhaps?
htmlishard: (no further comment)

All Kidding Aside...
I really do think it would make an excellent article idea.
1) The target audience is, in general, badly in need of information on how to be good netizens.
2) Informative on methods to find answers through in and out forum searches.
3) Educational on how to properly phrase your question when you really just can't find the answer.
4) Useful by providing links to especially good forums for online research (such as this one).
5) Humerous, by providing a link to Posting And You.

there's an idea. I didn't think about that. I just thought you were being a jerk to someone who's obviously looking for ideas.
I do like the "good netizen" idea. Or the DRM idea. But like I said before, most people won't be nearly as savvy as you are, and thus, you need to make sure you keep it at a level they can understand. You wan tot make sure you're not talking about writing a kernel driver in an "introduction to linux" article. Or something along those lines.

You could maybe do an article about Federal regualations that are moving through the Congress that involve online-social networks like MySpace or Facebook and what it means to them.
I'm sure many of the people in your HS have myspace profiles so I'm sure it would catch a few eyes.

I have to vote for the DRM article. Most junior- and senior-high school kids aren't going to be interested in how to be good netizens. They're the ones that 5p311 lik3 th1z, btw. On the other hand, they may be interested to know how their music collection may potentially be impacted.

Do an article on new technology in birth control. Every high school kid needs to know the facts, right?
Not to mention it'd be funny as shit.

95% of high school kids have an attention span of about 2 minutes with linux.
