What style of beer do you like?

First: if you don't drink beer, or like it and have anything valuable to contribute to the conversation, please don't reply.

I am not a beer drinker . I generally drink bourbon. I have tasted several beers and was quite put off by the taste. Recently i found out that there are different styles of beer. I live in Australia, and upon research found out that the beer market in Australia is overwhelmed with Lagers. All the beers i have tasted were Lagers. I've become very interested in this. I plan on buying some stout tomorrow to try it and see if i'm any more impressed with that.

So to all you beer drinkers out there, what style of beer do you like? and how do you feel about the other styles?

Snark1994 10-07-2012 10:43 AM

(Alcoholic) ginger beer is my favourite, then ciders (probably don't count for the purposes of this discussion, though), then lighter lagers like Carlsberg. I used to like stouts (well, guinness) but I've lately gone off them a bit. :)

sycamorex 10-07-2012 11:25 AM

Last year I started appreciating the taste of ales. I can't recommend any name as:

- I still haven't decided on my favourite one (I don't do the tastings that often:))
- I usually try some local ones which are probably not distributed abroad.

Hi Knightron,

Heineken and Stella Artois I would mention as a good beer for me.
But first of all same here I don't drink beer much. ;)

Home made plum, Jägermeister and Russian Vodka are the favorites... But of course small amount just for the taste.

Beer

I brew my own and like that better than any commercial beer. I live in the USA, and most commercial beer here is pretty tasteless.

For a drink, I prefer a good bourbon or a heavy dry wine. I find I do not drink very much of the beer I brew. Beer batter for fried fish and beer bread use up about twice the amount I drink.

Same here, I brew my own Old an Stout. Have them up to 11% proof (don't go driving after having a stubby). I don't like bitter beers (yeah I know kind of goes against the natural order of things) so I use brown sugar in my dark home brews to give a sweeter taste that sometimes seems caramelly (is that a word?).

frankbell 10-07-2012 09:24 PM

It's difficult to find the States, but English bitter.

TobiSGD 10-07-2012 10:39 PM

Thank Bob that I live in Germany, the country with the best beer in the world (warning, I am biased). And actually I like all kinds of beer, but the most I drink wheat beer and pils. Sometimes (rarely) a stout, the only type of foreign beer that I like.

m.a.l.'s pa 10-08-2012 01:04 AM

Sadly, I quit drinking early this year. But I guess doing so was good for my health. Dropped about 40 pounds, and physically I feel quite a bit better.

Anyway, I like just about any kind of beer. I'm probably no expert on beer; put one in front of me, I'd drink it! I think I could get used to anything.

Used to be a little place up in Ann Arbor called The Full Moon where you could try lots of different kinds of beers. I liked to stop in there every time I was up that way.

The last few months before I quit, I kinda developed a taste for Samuel Adams; various beers, but I especially liked Cherry Wheat.

Living out here in the Southwestern U.S., I also drank a lot of Mexican cerveza, especially Carta Blanca and Modelo Especial. Always seemed to go well with the food out this way.

My beer-aficionado friend tells me that all American beers are crap, but I also loved Bud.

brianL 10-08-2012 04:09 AM

Anything except weak fizzy lagers.

Knightron 10-09-2012 11:58 PM

I tried some guinness extra stout for the first time the other day. It's a lot different to my usual alcoholic beverages, but all up i enjoyed them and will be having a few more in the coming days. Don't know if it'll replace my bourbon but at least i didn't almost vomit after it came in contact with my tongue like some previous beers. The most surprising thing was the after taste, it was fabulous.

Wim Sturkenboom 10-10-2012 05:46 AM

I mostly drink Hansa or Windhoek. Sometimes a weiss beer.

Let's make that 'some of the better beers in the world' and I will agree with you :) The best beers come from the abbeys in Belgium and for me are WestVleteren and Chimay Blue (oh, I miss them soooooo much). And I'm not biased :D

cascade9 10-14-2012 06:22 AM

For the australians here, suprise! I dont like cascade beer. If I do drink beer, its normally VB (victoria bitter). Yeah, I know, its considered pretty bad.....at least I dont drink XXXX. :tisk:

Pretty much the same here, I'm far more likely to grab a cider than a ginger beer, and ginger beer over normal beer. However, I dont like Carlsberg, but AFAIK I've only had .au carlsberg, I've heard its better in europe.

I like a variety of beers from a few different countries.
From my home country of England I like many of the local beers especially those brewed with lots of bitter hops (there are several very good breweries in my home town).
From Germany I like the dunkel beers from Erdinger and others.
From Belgium Chimay is good but I really love Duchesse de Bourgogne which undergoes a secondary fermentation to add a taste almost akin to balsamic vinegar.
In the US I found the beer a bit poor but came across a beer from Pennsylvania which was more akin to European lager (probably due to the German contingent in that state). Sadly I forget the name though.
Best beer I've tried from Norway was Aass Fatøl though others were pretty good.
Most of the Czech pilsners are pleasant but a little uninteresting.
Same goes for Dutch lagers I've tried -- easy drinking and crisp taste but not all that interesting.

I thought you named yourself after cascading waterfalls ;)

Knightron:
I know what you mean about discovering that there's beer outside of lagers, as I'm from the US and we've got more generic lager than we can shake a stick at. Good thing there's craft & microbrews here to save us!

I'd suggest just trying out all the different beer you can, reading up on beeradvocate.com and other beer rating and review sites to get a general idea of what seems popular.

I wanted to throw out some buzzwords like stout and IPA, but I've found that once you descend into the world of better beer, those definitions break down and you really just have to drink the beer and let your tongue figure it out.

vmccord 10-16-2012 09:19 AM

I live in Kansas, US where there are so many very good micro wheat beers. Boulevard which is made in Kansas City is an excellent wheat beer. Their other beers aren't as great.

weirdwolf 10-20-2012 10:19 PM

Don't drink much these days, But when I do it's Ale, preferably a good stout ale. Rogue Dead Guy Ale (U.S.) and Guinness Extra Stout comes to mind. Sheaf Stout, IIRC, is from "Down Under" and was pretty good as well. You might like some of the IPA's as well.

rokytnji 10-20-2012 10:33 PM

In the desert here where temps reach 120F. A good clean lager beer that does not leave any leftovers/slickness in your throat or mouth is best. I prefer Red Stripe beer because of this.

Quenching your thirst is what it is all about here in the desert. Not eating your beer. Most American Lagers are too after tasty and are not like drinking spring water. Red Stripe got it right though. Clean and Crisp is best in high heat conditions.

Being a life long beer drinking biker. I have pretty much drank them all.

Yerahs, Sheaf Stout is from here (.au), another CUB (Carlton & United Breweries) beer. Though IIRC is another beer brand that CUB bought at some point in time.

Given some of the ciders a try? I find they are better in the heat than any beer. If its hot, avoid the 'hard' ciders, even if they are avaible. They will kick you in the head if drunk in the heat. ;)

rokytnji 10-21-2012 04:20 PM

No Hard Ciders available in my one horse town. I have the local beer drive-in order me the Red Stripe. Maybe if I knew the best cider. I would give the guy a special order just to try it out.

I'm not sure about this, I've never drunk it, but I've heard OK things about this brand. Should be more easily avaible in Texas than others-

Like girls/boys, cars/bikes, beer, and everything else there is no 'best' cider. There might be a cider thats best for you though. ;)

Hi,

Mostly, 'if it begins with 'B' and ends with 'r' then it's just a beer to me'. I'm open to most beers or ale to satisfy my thirst.

Dr's are limiting my intake for health reasons, so my nights out with the wife are when I imbibe in controlled manner. :) Occasionally a beer or ale at home whenever I want one.

I do enjoy tastings for local brew houses. Plus some friends are into home brewing. Man, some are really good while others should not be given to a 'horse' let alone a human. Nor even fit for 'pigs'. I will politely state, not my style, do you have a domestic. :)

Always wanted to brew my own, just too much on my plate now. :(
