So where is the "all of the above"
and the "all of the above and more" options in the 70s I hung out in an open drug market that the police knew about and left alone |

I started abusing recreationally (every day) at the ripe ol' age of 25 when I was shooting Meth on a daily basis. SuperLabs ruled the Southern California for a decade, unimpeded by such things as legality. It was in fact, a Legal Substance. The Syringes on the other hand, now those got you in trouble. And of course, one becomes a monster when shooting dope, so one goes to Prison for a few years. But people recover and give back to society by not being a dope fiend anymore. Computer Addicted? Oh hell yes. Quote:
I miss hitch-hiking around the country chasing the "Rainbow Festival" folks, or that legendary commune in Tennessee refered to only as "The Farm". Golden Gate Park was a blast in the mid-to-late '70s. but so was Laguna Beach, Ocean Beach, and Big Sur, in fact, ALL the Way Up the Left Coast of the USA! ;) Except for a 2 year relapse, we have been drug free since '93 and I last smoked a cigarette on 3/26/2013. I am addicted. My handle is Habitual. I use Slackware. |
Sort of on topic,
I ticked off quite a few boxes on the list. I can take or leave almost everything on the list. I am trying to quite smoking regular old Nicotine cigerettes and it's KILLING ME! There is no greater addictive substance than Cigerettes! |

I'm trying to figure out why caffeine is a "recreational" drug. It is a drug, but ...
A lot of "self medicating" is just self medicating rather than "recreational". I'm near the extreme of uninteresting for this kind of survey. I checked off only alcohol (I got slightly drunk twice in my live, but not in the last 30 years) and caffeine (three large cups of strong coffee each morning). I expect alcohol is mainly taken by others as a "recreational" drug. For some it could be "self medicating". I always just liked the taste of alcohol. I never liked the effects. It was never either recreational or self medicating for me. When I was a teenager, the only effect on me was getting very flushed (no impact on balance, reflexes, judgement, etc.). That was a modest drawback, so I could drink a lot or go months without a drop without giving either much thought (like eating ice cream). Then (around 1978) something changed in my metabolism, so alcohol affected balance, reflexes and probably judgement. After getting mildly drunk twice, I limited future consumption to not enough to have any such effect (real boring, I know). Those I attended MIT with almost all used cannabis recreationally and even closer to ALL used Nitrous Oxide recreationally. I was almost unique in never trying either. Depending on what you mean by "recreational" drug, my answers are probably wrong and I should have just said "none". Caffeine, aspirin, famotidine (heart burn prevention), etc. are all remedies for ordinary ailments. Some probably can be abused for recreation. Maybe I'm unimaginative failing to figure out how that works for caffeine. Three large strong cups each morning is likely more of an addiction than a remedy. But I don't think there was ever a recreational component. |
