Ain't this kind of old...not just the debate, but the software as well? Do people really still use Vi and Emacs? They always seemed like excessively complicated tools, designed to be unintuitive on purpose so that their users would feel like they are doing something really cool.
I don't like either, by the way. nano is my editor of preference. You might want to take a look at the Member's Choice Awards - Text Editor poll. That is if you are genuinely interested and not trying to start Yet Another Flame War.
No other explanation is necessary, nor could any other more succinctly state the truth. Emacs is the best editor because it has the most flexible extension language, therefore it is extended most flexibly.
