Have you named your computer(s)?

My primary linux machine is named charlene. I gave "her" that name after seeing the movie Full Metal Jacket. The guy that got harassed by the sergeant named his weapon charlene. Then he started talking to the rifle during nights and ended up shooting the sergeant and himself.

What about you? Is your computer just a dead lump of wires and silicon or is it a friend with a name?

I have a couple of systems..... My main box is called Buggs, mainly because I'm a big Buggs Bunny fan, and also because Buggs was constantly being chased by Elmer FUD (It's a play on word's, get it?).

I have a 286 Green-screen Toshiba laptop called Calc, because he has been accused of having less processing power than your average calculator.

and of course, there's frankenstein.

I also have a Win2K box, unnamed, because I fear that giving it a name will somehow violate the EULA and subject me to multiple lawsuits.

Mine is named Hal after the computer in '2001:A Space Odyssey'.

I call my computer "rig". I don't want to give it a real name because then I feel bad when I kick it.

My box names:

Dell D600 Laptop with Slackware = Slacktop --it's just appropriate.
Windows 2003 Server = Snowstorm --because I like snow.
My Home Desktop = Cheeseboy --because it's funny.
My Work Desktop = DMAN --because I'm DMan in real life.

Mine is named "smoker". Why? Well I had a 400MHZ with 128MBs of memory and went to this one. It is a little bit faster. he he he he.

I guess I need to name the other one "turtle" or "buggy". It was both. Sometimes it would boot, sometimes not.

No, my computer's not dead because it was never alive to begin with. I have to say there is a line between hobby and obsession; and, if you think of a machine as a friend instead of as a tool, you've come that much closer to crossing that line. I apologize for having spoken so frankly about this subject.

I call mine 'cheappc', 'cuz it's a really cheap pc.

Huh, what line? I asked all my friends about this supposed "line" thing that you speak of, but they don't talk much...just this soft high-frequency humming noise.

with a mobo and chip upgrade

Nah, it's just that if you have a moderately-sized home network, it's easier to remember a name than an IP address More often than not, it seems, my computer is my enemy...

Malcolm and Zoe are running at the moment; Wash and the box that was Zoe before it was "upgraded" (everything except hard drive replaced), which may be renamed someday, are in parts, and Jayne (laptop) is basically being used as a cat perch. I also have a Zaurus which was just called "Zaurus" when it was on the network, but if I get it back on I'll probably designate it Kaylee.

My laptop is named Ganymede, for the third major satellite of the planet Jupiter. The rest of my home network has similar planetary names:

Helios - firewall/DNS/file server/SMB master browser. It's a Pentium !!! 933MHz, with 512MB PC133 SDRAM on a Soyo SY-7VEM. This Christmas, it's going to get a newer, faster hard disk.

Mars - main system, with all the printers and other 3|33+ hardware. It's an Athlon XP 2500+ with 512MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM on an Asus A7V8X-X. It has a Matrox G450 and two DVSam 17" analog LCDS. Very 3|33+

Saturn - my sister's computer. It's a Shuttle SFF with an Athlon XP 2100+, either 256MB or 512MB of PC2x00 DDR SDRAM, and a 15" LCD panel.

Titan - my father's laptop. Refurb'ed Gateway Solo 1450 with a Pentium !!! 1.3GHz proc with 512MB PC2100 DDR SODIMM SDRAM.

I also have a dead system in my garage which is just an amalgamation of parts and stuff. It has no life in it ATM and probably never will except in dire emergency.
