I know this might not be the time and place for this subject but I thought (since this being the "General" section of the forum) it was the best place to put it. Other than being a programmer and videogame freak I also have a social life. I already know what love is. It is a strong positive emotion of regard and affection. In my opinion love is a strong feeling that blinds you to be with another person. I just wanted to know your opinions about what "love" is from all you hackers, programmers, etc.
It is a chemical reaction begun by a set of stimuli that match your particular needs or wishes(sight, sound, smell, etc). Or large doses of chocolate....Or cocaine....or X.
- Love is a snowmobile racing across the tundra and then suddenly it flips over, trapping you underneath. At night, the ice weasels come. - Homer Simpson
I only know what it isnt. When I wake up and have no coffee, no breakfast and no money!!
yes, thats marriage.
love is the wonderful stimulation of chemical receptors, brought on by pheromones ("love is in the air" is the literal truth in some cases), making a attachment to someone to further the attraction that they feel, and increase the likelihood of sex to continue the survival of genes. love is little more then a trick to try and keep genes alive, nothing more. Another reason is to keep people together, raising a human is years, and its unrealistic to expect anyone to do it alone, so if "love" wasn't around, odds are humans would have died off when living alone was near suicide.

a mere side effect of the chemicals released, nothing more.
its a real shame most people think love is so great, its just another chemical imbalance brought on by a proximity to someone who likes you, then you exchange those annoying pheromones, then you start doing funny things as your head gets to many chemicals. So instead of asking "do i love this person?" it should be "does this person have good genes?", as you wouldn't be asking if you didn't like them enough.
Dear God what crap.... Love a mear chemical reaction?! Please don't reduce humans to mear robots....
I think you people are thinking to much in the lines of romantic 'love'. But there are so many other kinds of love. Love for your parents, for your kin. For a fellow human just because he is exactly that... human. Please don't reduce all that to "oh, those are just chemical reactions".
Love is so much more then the desire to make love...... In my opinion, it's part of what makes us human.
Ever heard of Layla and Mujnoon? They were two lovers, like romeo and juliette. Here is a wonderfull poem by the 13th century sufi mysitic, Rumi about these two characters;
Quote:
Whoever is loved is beautiful and
the converse not necessarily true
Lovableness is the root principle
from which beauty grew.
'There are girls more beautiful than Layla',
they told Majnoon
'But I don't love Layla for her form'
responded Majnoon
'Layla in my hand is like a cup
'It is the wine within I am in love with
'You have eyes for the beaker,
'Of the wine within you are unaware',
said Majnoon
'A golden goblet studded with precious stones
Containing vinegar
'Or something else other than wine
Would be of no use to me
'An old broken gourd of wine
Is superior to such a golden goblet
And hundreds like it,
said Majnoon
For a man to tell the wine from the beaker
He must be moved with passion and yearning
Take two men, one hungry the other full
The man suffering from hunger
Perceives a living nourishing soul in a piece of bread
The man full of food merely conceives the shape of the bread.
Oh well, I guess they had chemical reactions in the 13th century as well
I don't want to offend anybody, but I think this is the stupidest thread in lq forums......
No offense
even stupider then the latest "linux is not ready for the desktop/average user" type threads?, or the ever around "which distro is best?", or the never fading "post a link to your screenshot" thread?

you make it sound like humans are superior?, sorry to disappoint you, but humans are like any other animal. Those same reactions occur in other animals also, don't dare think its "human" specific, it was passed thru the genes, most mammals have the same emotion (or at least, evidence of it, not like we all can talk to animals), ever since the dinosaurs died, and the early mammals came out of the ground to eat the food that suddenly became plentiful ..... then "evolved" into humans ..... its not hard to see the only thing that separates humans from other animals is merely a "better" brain (the "better brain" part is a different discussion tho), if the early mammals didn't have such emotions, do you think you would be alive?, or would you be some other animal?, a snail?, penguin?, cat?, squid?
also: the more you look at the body, the more it seems more robotic .... the veins/arteries to give "power" to your body, the neural system that controls your body? .... or the cells that seem even more robotic?, robots can have emotions to, you don't be afraid that you could resemble one.
