What is a dialer support ?
 

I am planning to buy a Virgin Mobile data-card for accessing internet.

I have checked its FAQ, its written they have Linux drivers,
but
what really concerns me is the following statement in bold from their FAQ:

What is a dialer support ?
What shall I lose if I don't have a dialer support ?

Kindly guide !

All I get is a massive flash movie and no relevant links.

The dialer is a thing that does the dial up connection for you on windows.
On linux you will have to configure the device as a modem.

On SuSE I use UMTSmon. KNetworkManager isn't working (I believe it is a known bug which might be corrected in the upcoming 11.3).

I didn't know something other than knetworkmanager also exists ! Aah and that is said to work on Slack too !

Please note, that UMTSmon is not anymore in active development, as the authors themselves recommend knetworkmanager (which is broken in the actual SuSE 11.2).

If and when you use UMTSmon you'd best adhere to the recommended procedure: running it the first time from console with "/usr/bin/umtsmon" as root (or sudo) since some other packages need to get tweaked (that way you can see all the output). You can also raise the verbosity either with "/usr/bin/umtsmon -vv" or "/usr/bin/umtsmon -v5", best will be you do a "man umtsmon".

I do not know knetworkmanager is available for Slack or not. I'll have to figure that out in the Slackware forum.

You are welcome. Knetworkmanager is part of KDE (which runs on slack AFAIK).

I am not going to install KDE there, My Slack would be running LXDE ! May be Slackbuilds contain knetworkmanager.
