What do you think of Mono
I am computer science student. After graduating, I have to make money from programming. Rigth now I am learning gtkmm programming ( Only God knows how much I love GTK+ ). If I Windows minded person, I will learn .NET stuff. I believe that most of Windows programmers pro .NET. But in Linux, you got what it called Mono. Unfortunately, after googled, diving into forums, not all Linux minded persons agree with Mono. You can say that about 50% - 50%. Some people say that it is Microsoft pirated things. Some says it make programming easier. And bla bla bla bla bla.
What do you think of Mono? Should I learn it? It looks interesting. But well, about 40-50% persons contra Mono!!!!!!!!!!!! I cann't believe it. |
mono is ok,
and it never hurts to know more languages, with C# under your belt you can now do .net programming and Linux stuff for corps that need it. |
Come on, everyone uses stereo these days. :)

look for new mono posts
great news!
monodevelop allows opening a raw Bill Gates project .sln file with System.Windows.Forms Want an example? ask! |
What Do You Think Mono Is?
Uh, you do know that Mono is a .Net environment that can be run in Linux - right? "Learning Mono" and "Learning .Net" sort of go together.

From a programmer's perspective, C# is a good language and .NET is a good framework. They're not the be-all and end-all of software development, but they're definitely worth learning. Given that, Mono is good by extension.
From a community standpoint, Mono is good because it helps bring people to the free software world. For a typical corporate Windows developer, Mono means that they no longer have to completely replace their existing skillset in order to move to Linux. It reduces the pain of switching and makes free software more attractive. So, yeah, learn them. It certainly can't hurt anything. And you may be pleased to know that GTK# (the Mono GTK+ binding) is the "official" GUI toolkit for Mono on Linux. Monodevelop even includes a form designer for it. |
mono develop is great opening .sln files from raw .NET projects
but...is there a gui Windows.Forms designer as C#.NET Visual Studio?
I don't see one but I am looking |

When MS got busted in court with their "Embrace, Modify, Destroy" strategy against Sun, they came up with C# as an alternative Java killer. Can you in good conscience participate in achieving MS's goal.

I hate Mono...
Although it may have the good side of making .NET multiplatform, it also furthers the C# language abortion and Microsoft's agenda by spreading its use. And I hate Miguel de Icaza for promoting it so vigorously. |
I've always tried very hard to not catch Mono.
|
where can it go beyond hobby stage!
It would take a large staff to keep up with .NET now 3.0 It is the same concept as Java but will not go that far! I got even with Microsoft today by installing ad blocker plus and blocking google and rad.msn.com. |
i'm having the impression that mono is slow ... you need to burn ten tons of coal in-order to just just click on one button ...
mono is against the "486" culture ... so obviously it is also contradicts linux in some ways ... . |
Well there is this interesting article at OSNews about how Mono might eventually become a fundamental part of GNOME in the future:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php/5746...archy-of-Mono/ I have been mostly a KDE fan since I started using GNU/Linux, but GNOME (especially the latest release) is also pleasant to use and attractive. However, the day GNOME becomes entirely Mono-centric is the day I'll never set foot into the GNOME camp again... |
