What's IBM doing?
 

Anyone know what IBM's plans are? We've all seen there linux commercials that make no sense. I've heard they are developing a linux distro and a new processor. Are they planning on releasing the linux disribution and they're Cell processor for consumer use? I know it's going to be in the Playstation 3 but what about home pc's? All I can find is out-dated articles.

IBM have a unix enviroment called AIX, the latest being AIX 5L the `L' stands for Linux. Its very easy to use, has the bash shell (if you desire) and another tool called smitty. Some of AIX's commands have a lot more switches and options that in a standard linux based system you simply dont use, smitty makes not having to remember all those easy. Basically its a gui that enable you to manage things like users e.g adding/removing, password resetting. it'll even tell you the command its about to execute before you do.

I dont know about the Cell processor. whats the link?

So IBM not targetting home-users with their linux?

no, not at all.

and the cell processor is just a multi-processor system they will use to power the next PS3 AFAIK. nothing to do with linux, other than the fact that id want to install linux on the PS3.

I doubt it, especially with news that IBM is in talks on selling their PC buisness to an Asian company called Lenovo. Here's a link to a little blurb about it on Slashdot. It has link to the full article on the New York Times but it requires registration.
