What is the basic difference between WAP and GPRS?

gprs is a network connection. wap is a service network that is used via a network connection and a suitable browser.

so, you can use wap via gprs.

my opinion is that wap generally sucks, since almost every service is pay-per-view. so get a phone that does have a real browser and a real internet connection (some nokias come with opera, i prefer doris browser. very fast and small). that way you can use evry available web service without extra cost (you only pay for the connection, not for the stuff you read).

Doesn't WAP has its own protocols and can work independently from GPRS?

WAP stands for "Wireless Application Protocol, standard for accessing the internet with wireless devices, e.g. mobile phones.". It still needs some sort of connection to do it (gprs, gsm-data etc.).

so, WAP is not comparable to GPRS. instead, WAP is like WWW, while GPRS is like ADSL. you can verify this by trying to use WAP without defining the connection method

So a wap gateway requires GPRS to tranfer data to mobile phones etc?
Does wap work only with GPRS or are there any other methods too?

it works with other gsm data connections, but gprs should be cheaper since other options are charged per second.
