Version 1.2506 < version 1.516 for a given package?

Suppose I have a package john-1.2506 and another one, john-1.516. Which version is earlier, I mean which release came first of the two? If the numeration is decimal, then obviously 1.2506 < 1.516.

I'd have to go with 1.516 being earlier, that version looks like it's based on the revision checked out from subversion or git or similar.

Then I'm undone. I give you the exact names: ntfs-3g-1.2506 and ntfs-3g-1.516. I do not know their origins. Does it give you a better idea?

EDIT: infact I look for ntfs-3g 1.2506 or later for linux (sources) and they seem to exist nowhere. Could you give me a hand?

With a quick google... and if I am looking at the correct news archives 1.2506 was released in 2008-05-05 23:46 vs 1.516 2007-05-15 22:42
