Seems one of the biggest cable internet providers in Canada is no longer going to supply usenet access. I have not as of yet had a chance to ask them how much my monthly bill will be reduced due to the reduction in services provided.........they give me access to three servers, mail, news and internet......I assume they will be cutting bills by a third.........LOL.

Just thought I would post this to fuel some thought. They have not announced this to their customers, so most will figure it out in a month when they are trying to reconfig their usenet accounts which vanished. I just happened to stumble on it while surfing. Less than impressed.

Oh, boy. When I was with them, their Usenet access was up and down. The ISP I'm on now (tfnet.ca) has none, so I'm subscribed to yottanews.

If you don't mind my asking since I shall soon be contemplating going to a commercial news server, what is the average download speed for binaries? I was with cogeco last year, had download speeds of around 650kbs with sometimes good sometimes mostly broken binaries, rogers has been good for few broken binaries but download speeds around 37 kbs. Yottanews free server for testing is currently off line so cannot try it out to see if I am willing to pay for it.

don't have times, but they're darned fast ... using Pan, with just 2 connections open, I get speed subjectively comparable to Rogers at its best.

Just now I got a speed of 259 kbs, downloading a copy of Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World from alt.binaries.ebook .

That is reasonable at their price, thanks brashley.

if you are looking for something that is not too expensive and still has the best service go with newshsoting

i am on rogers too and since 5 days ago i got myself an unlimited account for 14.95 monthly and couldnt be happier... it caps my modem at 700kbs, retention is 40 days on alt.binaries its quite nice.

if you have the extra $ to spare go wtih giganews, 24 a month but 70 day retention

honestly those two are the real options out there, the rest don't even come close to them

Thanks Brashley46, took a look at them. Looks like a company I would be interested in. Shall dig a little deeper during the next week off, and expect I will sign on too. Good speed for an impatient guy.
