Uninstalls... do they really?

I was just thinking.. again, that in Windoze, it is difficult to uninstall an app because it leaves traces of itself throughout the file system and registry.

Do uninstalls in Linux do the same thing? I mean, I know there is no registry, but what about file remnants? Is there a way to know for sure if something is completely gone?

well with a 'make' the system decides where everything should go, and on 'make uninstall' it goes back over that list and delete's the relevant files that it installed. it can't remove ~/.file things.. and such like. it's a fairly crude system, but it works generally. same goes for RPMs largely i think
