Troubles Getting Ubuntu to Boot from a USB External HD (BIOS?)

I've installed Ubuntu linux onto my new USB external hard-drive, but noticed that I couldn't get it to boot because my BIOS doesn't support booting from an external HD (or any USB device for that matter). After some reasearch, I found my BIOS version to be "PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0". I also found that there was a "release 6.1" to this BIOS which supposedly supports booting from USB devices (exactly what I need). Upon some more google searching, I found that it is possible to upgrade your BIOS by "flashing" it, or overwriting it with the new version. The only problem is that I have no idea how to find and download the software I need to upgrade. The only other thing I know is that the motherboard was made by intel, but I'm not sure of the exact model number. Can anyone help me with this? From what I read, it seemed like the upgrade would be a free one. If you need any further information that you think may help, I will do my best to find it.

You can google for your computer model (if you bought a dell or hp or whatever) and then on their site they should have updated bios to download. Then what you usually have to do is put it on a floppy (or in windows) and then run this program and it overwrites your bios. If it works, you win. If it doesn't, you lose big because your system is unbootable...
