transfer files from raid1 box to raid5 box

I will need later to transfer files from a raid1 local machine to a colocated machine using raid5.

My understanding is that it does not matter what type of raid each machine is using, it is just a matter of transferring the files.

Is this correct?

Depends,

yes if you use hardware raid, no if you use software raid.
yes if you want to transfer file which won't effect system, no if you want to include file like /etc/fstab, /boot/grub/menu.lst, /etc/cryptab or etc mission critical file
yes if you want to transfer entire OS to new harddisk and you know how to recover grub, no if you don't know how to repair grub or lilo.
yes if your sistem support your new raid device, no if your sistem not support the raid5 device.

I sure you understand what I means.

Thank you kstan, it is very enlightening.

What I intended to do is to start a site on a local machine using 2 sata drive under software raid 1 (no raid card at all) and later transfer the files to a colocated and much more powerful machine that uses raid 5 through a real raid controller card.

These files have to be transferred as binary, they are not system files but programs and data files which are not plain ASCII.

If I change the local machine to a hardware raid 1, will that solve the problem?

Thank you for your answer.

I have forgotten to mention an important point, the transfer mentioned has to be done through the Internet (ftp) from a local machine in AU to a colocated machine in the US.

seems like your both system is running well, and you only need to transfer non system file between 2 pc. So, probably it work. However sometimes the software still depends on some setting which you make not realise, try to make both system more similar. Example the following items:-
-locales
-software and data PATH
-others env setting
