you've posted your query under 'Linux-Hardware'. Do you have Linux installed? - What distribution?
please provide whatever additional info you can as well to help us to try to diagnose the problem
i have windows 98 installed.when i put in my usb drive a message pops up. unknown device. it says it needs to be updated. my computer dosen't have internet so i need to put the update on disk but i can't find the update
Windows 98 does not support USB drives without additional drivers. If none were provided with the drive when you purchased the unit then unless provided us with the make / model we can not help you.
What kind of thumb drive is it? Not all of them are automatically detected in Windows 98, my old one wasn't. I had to go download some drivers off their site to make it work.

only users of linux know that initial step ... that is consistently always and should be the second thing in mind if you use linux ...
if graphicstodrench managed to solve his problem through the linux way , probably hes the next right candidate in the linux world ...
so , graphicstodrench , dont give up ...
//btw , there are also win drivers sites which collect "wild" drivers among proper ones ... if the hardwares site doesnt support win98 , probably you can try those sites ...

I have no idea what you just said. But I'm drunk, so I have an excuse. Could you clairify anyway?

dont drink ...

let him know that what he have experienced in windows in some odd situations he will experience that too while he is in linux ... linux is not that hard actually ... he can use the same methods on both different systems ...
and also ... its not everytime that we can find a working drivers for everything in windows too ... just like linux ...
could have cut down on the unneccessary worries when they try to use linux ... just "swallow" it and search for other possible solutions ...
