This may be of interest to UK drivers
 
This fella has set up a 'club' which negotiates bulk discounts on petrol on behalf of its members. He reckons on saving you 5-10p per litre if he can get 100,000 members. He has 90,000 and reckons on issuing members cards in april. This whole service costs you nothing.

I've checked out the website and followed most of the links and I have to say it all looks pretty kosher. The guy is a petrol-head and fairly well known as a campaigner against fuel duty's in the UK.

I'll have to read that link. Though the old "bulk buying" trick is nothing new. My current workplace "burns" about 8 to 9 tanks of diesel a month (we're one of about 18 different "yards") - they have a national "deal" (esso I think but don't quote me), so that "they" just turn up (when asked) and drop a whole load in our tank. The difference is something like between 20 to 25 pence per litre cheaper.

Even though I haven't read that link (yet), it's fair to say that there are addtitional problems with petrol (or "spirit" as we who've worked in the trad call it). The inherant higher levels of volatility meant that it's probably cheaper to manage a site that only has diesel, the additional safety concerns with spirit can be enough to up the price from one filling station to the next.

Plus, you'd find that when it comes to bulk buying/keeping prices down that way, then the Fuel companies just need to be able to maximise their transport infrastructure i.e. turn up and dump a whole load of one product, when they have to do "split loads" there can be considerable additional overhead (time/transport cost/safety stuff/some other bits and pieces).

And no, I'm not defending them. They (the suppliers) and their retail outlets are bloody robbers (yes, along with the government). Who seem to think that we're all bloody stupid when it comes to what we're prepared to pay for that fuel!

No arguments here! I saw something about this on the telly. apparently the treasury makes 43 billion a year from motorists from road and fuel tax. 5 billion a year gets spent on the roads every year. Feel like you're getting shafted by Mr Brown? Thats cos you are!!
