Question The oncoming robotics/AI revolution is in the back of my mind...

I'm actually thinking how all of this is going to pan out.

I mean if this so called robotics/AI revolution does happen, which I think it will, they are going to need less humans to work for a wage.

If you can't work for a wage, then you can't support yourself...so I wonder what we are going to do with all of our free time?

Is anyone else thinking about this?

Starve?

But it will all quickly become a moot point, because, without jobs, we won't be able to pay the power-bills needed to keep the robotics alive, and/or to buy the goodies that the robotics produce.

However, I'm also reminded of a classic skit ... I don't know if it ever made it to YouTube but you can easily imagine how it went: "Test of the world's first bionic arm." (The actor was screaming, "turn it off!! turn it off!!!!")

wars will be fought so that some can gain more advantage and populations controlled into thinking that life is a zero-sum game.
Sadly humans want to hurt and kill other humans more than almost anything else. We passed the stage where people need to work in "the west" decades ago and the "developing world" (apologies for generalisations) is mainly "developing" because some mass murdering excrement or other is controlling the resources.

There won't be a Star Trek, no need to work, world because humans won't allow anybody else to be happy. Our species is wired to see everything as zero-sum.

R\Evolution don't need "jobs:" education, food\H2O and shelter. Teach the bots to like knickknacks and shiny things, we could make a killing with more slaves?

We'll probably need a lot of people to fix broken robots.

It could stagnate and stay the same as it has for years and years. After all, we've heard of robotic revolution for years, in fact I wrote an essay on that in college 30 years ago. Not a good one mind you, but we had a writing requirement, so there you go.

There's also plenty of far thinking "bad" cases like The Matrix, iRobot, Terminator. iRobot was written in like the 50s.

A moderately funny story involving replacement of limbs, because I know a guy who would be all "whatever" about robotic limbs:

"Dave" former coworker with one leg. Well, he got a new leg. IN THE LUNCH ROOM, was HIS LEG! He got a new one, but as with all new equipment: (1) it don't always fit well or there's an adjustment period like a new baseball glove or ice skates (2) it don't always work as genius-ly as the inventors promised, so he needs to "tweak" them. Hence he brought old leg and new leg and he happened to leave the old leg in the lunch room at work. So ... paraphrased dialog = "Hey, where's Dave?" "Don't know, but he can't be far!" "Why?" "His bleeping leg is RIGHT HERE on the floor!" "... anybody hear him hopping around?" (some giggles) "You're a jerk!" "I'm just looking for Dave!" Dave walks in normally, three or four people drop to their knees and exclaim, "IT'S A MIRACLE!" Dave grins like he's The Savior, raises his hands in a Nixon victory salute and dances out in his limping gait, not to return.

As long as our resources remain scarce and our imaginations infinite, there's not going to be any shortage of things to do.

So, will robots work for a wage in the future?
Free time could be utilized for speculating on Robotics/AI, developing avocado flavored toothpaste, or
figuring out how to let most of the world drink clean water.

Humanity will never have a robotic workforce that takes our place.
Commerce and Economy won't allow it.

I was just watching Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S03E18, they brought up "Transhumanism" so I had to google it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism ...

What if the robots ran the power plant and there were no needs for humans?
