Hi guys,

I dunno if any one else here access to gmail, but if anyone indeed has access, can you please refer me so that I too can get to use it :)

Though why anyone would want Google reading their mail so they can give you ads is absolutely beyond me.

Well, XavierP, nowadays every mail provider reads your mail, either to check for spam or viruses. So, I don't have a problem for Google reading my mail. Also, if you use Yahoo mail, you'll know that the ads take about 1/3rds to about 2/3rd of the screen space. In gmail, the ads are small ads that are relevant to the message, so I welcome them :)

Hmm. Agreed your mail is scanned for viruses, but I don't want my provider scanning my mail in order to direct ads at me. And what happens when your box gets spammed? Surely that would mean that Google thinks you want more advertising just like it...... stand by for directed marketing featuring dating sites, viagra, "licensed" medicines and lots and lots of pr0n. :)

Well, each one has his own options... I don't mind ads at all if I get a good storage space and if the ads does not disturb me.. like the ones from Yahoo.

Also, I prefer ads that are related to the subject, instead of flash ads asking whether I want to marry or not :)

Most free webmail providers already parse your mail for ad-relavent content. They just haven't been up front with it. Thats like saying don't use ICQ because their disclaimer says its not secure, but using msn, aim, or yahoo IM believing that you're safe. They just don't tell you up front - but its in the TOS.

The only way to avoid that is to send your own encrypted mail from your own server.

What about a free hushmail e-mail account where you can send an encrypted e-mail from your hushmail e-mail account to another hushmail user's account without fooling around setting up any of the various e-mail encryption programs out there?

I don't really mind them reading my email, since they're not actually ever read by a human being.

Good idea, but still you use someone else's server for your email. I was talking about guarantees.

I don't know if anyone has figured this out yet, but I think the big media attention regarding Google and privacy has been created to cause news, rather than report it. All free email providers have the wherewithall to parse your email. They are all equally able to do with that as they please. Most TOS say that your email is their property, in a way (ever read the eula for incredimail?). My point is that this is not a Google/privacy issue. I use Yahoo! mail ,as its been free for years and they don't block me from clicking on a URL my friend directs me to, like Hotmail (reading your email???). Are they angels about privacy? No! They will plant web bugs in your email (they admit to it in their privacy agreement). They are more likely to invade your privacy than Google (for marketing purposes). This is not an issue about how bad Google is.

Its a means to print a news story. The time was finally right to cause a stir, obviously.

I have Gmail! I don't use it for any real purpose. I just won it on the net in a forum.

I've been using gmail for a couple of weeks now, and I havn't even noticed the ads. I completly forgot they were even suposed to be thier until i started reading this forum. If anyone is worried about people reading thier email, they should just send snail mail. Every free web mail service scans the emails to market ads. Im convinced thats how they are able to provide a free service. Of course thiers a good chance that i'm wrong, but thiers a chance that im right. Gmail also offers a gig of storage. nobody here seemed to want to recognise that fact yet. thats what your getting for google letting a computer scan your email so they can put ads that you wont even notice unless you look for thm.

Mostly all of us want gmail. Soon enough it will be out and all of us will be able to get it when we want to. Just wait a few weeks

Hi all,

Here's the deal, I have one gmail invite that I will give away right here in this thread. The catch, to get this invite, you must find out and post (with all work) the amount of heat is generated by a normal sized hampster over its lifetime, and this must be in BTU's.
