Why not educate them in BOTH windows AND linux? Not just one or the other.

Saying that the students only should be educated in linux, is like saying only history, or literature is important and no need to focus on any other subjects like maths and sciences.

After reading his post on the previous page (well, previous page for me ), I get the feeling that Kenny is just having personal issues with his peers/teachers and has been approaching the whole "Linux vs. Windows" issue in a less-than-tactful way with them.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but that's the general feeling I get...

M$ and AppŁe both have bullied schools enough by telling them they must have Windoze computers. I cringe at the fact that teachers at one of my schools associate Windoze -- and only Windoze -- with computers. They have no idea that there are other better operating systems out there. Then again, whenever I mention the word "operating system" everybody always says "What is an operating system?" For the love of God, if you can't Google the words "operating system" in quotation marks to find that out you're 10x dumber than I am.

That said, that school's (and I'm NOT referring to El Toro, although they also have M$ or AppŁe software on most of their computers) teachers are paranoid about every little thing that kids do on the computers besides surf the Web, and I'm tired of it. Even running Windoze Update they call "messing" with the computers, and that's vital for computer security -- if Windoze is not up to date the latest malware threats can quickly overwhelm it.

I once brought a USB flash drive with Linux Mint on it and before anybody could even give me a chance to do anything one of the most evil teachers in my classroom scolded me with all his might "Don't even plug that flash drive in!" It's as though everybody there wants us to keep quiet and even if kids like me know more than they do they still don't care. They only want to boss us around, not knowing that we actually know more than they do. If I know more than they do, they should listen to me and let me at least show them that nothing but manually and purposely deleting system files or other users' documents will do anything to harm any computer -- and then if system files of one OS are replaced with system files of another OS no harm is done. Their belief is that I don't know anything about computers just because I'm not employed by some M$-corrupted computer repair business even though they're wrong.

Why are they wrong? Because they don't know anything about Micro$oft's corrupt business practices like vendor lock-ins as well as the fact that "computer viruses" are really Windoze viruses. Just because they don't know nearly as much as I do in the field of computing doesn't mean they should boss me down to their level.

What all this comes down to is fear. The teachers are so fearful of trying new things that they want us to feel the same way even though we don't. This is the totalitarian state of mind that so many teachers and business owners have.

Here's my question for them: Do you really know more than me? If you don't know what the term "operating system" means, then you don't. If you don't know what the term "command line" means or what any commands (which are really programs that you type the name of) do, then you don't. If you don't know the Linux-based equivalents of popular Windoze applications, then you don't. If you don't know how to navigate the top and bottom panels or even the Windoze Start menu to launch applications, you don't. If you don't know how to shut down a computer without logging out (that is, with the so-called "power-menu" that is activated by an arrow pointing to the right next to the Start Menu power button in Windoze or with the power icon on the top panel to the right in Linux), you don't. If you don't know any of these things, you're already 50x dumber than I am.
So to sum it up, everyone one in the world is dumb, based on a few zealous observations. Don't forget to remind me when to breathe, please.

Hahaha. Kenny....Teachers are like that because they get dumb ignorant ass students like you who come in and go "I know more about you about X Y and Z." The reason your teacher said "Don't plug that in" is because if someone walked in and saw you doing that, not only would your ass be on the line for expulsion, but also their job could be lost. The computers at schools aren't your play-things, so I suggest you do as the teacher says because they're NOT YOURS. And your teachers really are smarter than you. I suggest you drop that attitude because I don't see you with a Master's Degree.

Now, as for this whole Windows in schools things...It's because when you go out and get a job, 9/10 times you'll be doing things on a Windows computer. So why teach something that is almost irrelevant in the job market place when that would only take up precious money that they don't really have in the first place? And this is not because of some conspiracy, its because Microsoft was widely adopted by home users FIRST. This means comfortability with the platform, more of a user base and more support for the platform. Since everyone back when DOS came out knew the word "Microsoft = my computer," it kind of stuck. So yes, Microsoft grew into this legacy and is now what we see today. NOT BECAUSE OF SOME OF THIS BULL SHIT YOU'RE SAYING!!! You're claiming that all these people are retards that don't know their shit, well neither do you.

Also, if Microsoft has access to my personal files, I'd go in there and shoot them or they'd have a HUGE lawsuit on their hands as they have no right because of the Constitution of the United Sates. You're not "agreeing your files away" you're agreeing on them taking certain aspects of your computer (What programs you ran, where you were, and what you do) to make their OS better. Many Linux Distros ask for certain Hardware Profiles and its up to the user to send them. Windows just takes out the user because idiots like you would freak out and spam grammar errors all over our nice forums if a pop-up said "Microsoft would like your information on your computer." So, before you go blabbing your mouth, please know that there are people smarter than you.

Once you get educated then hopefully a composition that seems to benefit or even provides constructive criticism to the thread will come forth.

Kenny, your banter is nothing but rubbish. Your comparative knowledge just shows where yours is lacking. Comparison of ones knowledge to someone else is rather childish.
Your simplistic presentations above are minimalistic therefore reinforce my understanding of your abilities. Please remember even monkeys can be conditioned to perform repetitive tasks.

Not at all. I was not educated at all in "Windows skills," and yet I am one of the most proficient Windows users in my workplace. More details here: Teach kids computer skills, not computer programs

Computer skills implies being able to work in either Windows or Linux. Also if you had read the previous posts, it was suggested that ONLY Linux should be used, and Windows discarded. That sounds like useless zealotry to me.

Cool

Hello everyone,
LQ has been kind enough to keep me abreast of all the posts in this "mega thread" via e-mail! Why are people not shifting (as expected or as they should) to Linux Distros? Let us not indulge in flame wars as who's "Dumb and Dumber"! Not all Win. users are dumb and not all Linux users are smart! People are smart and they know what works for them.Period.In my country, 80-90% of computer institutes insist on teaching Win. language. They do teach Linux, but only when guys like me insist.

It just goes to show that either Win.is either user-friendly OR they "promo" themselves excellently! The support forums for Win. are so useless, one might as well "Google" for solutions or visit sites like techguy.org (i was a member with posts >2000.,or bleeping computer or wilderssecurity, etc.

I personally feel that with a plethora of Linux flavors, the newbies are a confused lot! Once they get in, they WILL find that CLI is NEEDED.
The different types of downloads ,deb, tar.gz1, tar.gz2,RPMs,etc and the "dependencies" confuse them even more. New versions of the same flavor once in 6 months OR more gets under their skin! When i visit the LQ Newbie forum, even the questions are "out of this galaxy" to me.

Given a choice, folks plump for the easier one, money becoming a secondary factor. There are so many free apps. for Windows, one need not spend at all or a fistful of Dollars, depending on their degree of "fear". I can list out the free apps. if any one is curious. If someone using Linux tells me that he has been struggling to"get a handle" on his distro, i do not categorize him as "dumb", as i consider myself a civilized animal, but rather blame the distro, even if it is UBUNTU!

We are blaming Win. ,for being a monster, but what about Coke,Pepsi,Walmart, etc? They are in the business of CUT-THROAT-business, where as Linux has an approach of "LIKE IT OR LEAVE IT"!(sorry for the bold type).

regards,
vyver.

The problem is more with windows being preinstalled on new computers. You get a new computer, turn it on, there's windows. It has been this way for a long time now. Choosing an operating system at purchase time has never been an option(unless you want a mac).
Now people are used to windows and don't see the NEED to learn something new.

Coke/Pepsi are rivals. Microsoft has no such competition as far as OS goes.
Walmart. I can do without.

That pretty much sums it up- lots of people don't even know that there is an alternative, 'cause for a long time, a PC MEANT a Windows computer. If it's all they've ever used, many people see no reason to change. From my own observation, more people are becoming aware of Linux as a viable alternative- it's just not happening as quickly or as broadly as one might hope.

Not only that, but there's still not a lot of support from the developers for Windows programs onto Linux and some FOSS counterparts may not exist. I've tried to move my mom onto Linux for her web browsing and e-mail because its faster than Windows, but she won't because Linux doesn't have the Unity Browser Plugin for certain 3D browser games she loves. That, and she loves the Kodak EasyShare Software, and no matter how much I try she won't listen to me when I say I can make it work. Its all really a matter of what your comfortable with. Even with the newest version of Windows, she says she can't use the new redesigned Start Menu in Vista or 7. Thus, I am forced to make it look like its from XP.

If Windows meets the needs of a user, I see no reason for that user to change operating systems. I came to Linux because Windows alone did not meet my needs.

To a degree yes, but Windows met my needs at the point I decided to try Linux.

Exactly. Everyone I know who has a computer runs Windows, all they use it for is emails, web-surfing and searches, and other "average user" stuff. They don't want to delve any deeper, most of them are far from dumb and they have other interests. I might mention Linux as an alternative if the subject crops up, but if their eyes glaze over with boredom, then I'll drop the subject.
