No diagnostics needed: It's a 21.6k dial-up connection shared by two computers.

If one machine's receiving content, the other gets bogged down. If one's downloading something, the other can barely get http traffic.

I have on my Firewall/LAN machine some tc/qdiscs set up to divide the traffic, but the bandwidth is simply so low that they have little effect. They seem to work OK for sharing bandwidth between FTP traffic vs HTTP traffic, but for sharing between multiple http connections over both machines, it's pretty useless.

Also, Konquerer has not yet duplicated any posts on me, but then, the net isn't too cloggy at the moment/lately, as the roommate's gone to bed. I DID however time out on one or two in-thread edits with Konq and was reloaded to the Advanced Editor page.

PS - I'm basically done with this thread-- I don't seem to be learning anything here, so if anyone else wants to close it, I won't mind; it's kinda a waste of space and hasn't proven anything.

I do remember the dial-up days so you have my sympathy. Not that it'll solve problems but I hope you at least have tweaked your browser to run as lean as possible and that you run a persistent caching nameserver and a caching HTTP proxy...

I'll do the honors then.

Not to forget 'cloggy' --

'Cloggy' - (adv.) : Suffocatingly slow; bogged down; acting as though clogged, but not completely; In the process of becoming clogged, as with a network or drain-pipe. Ex: "My network is very cloggy today."

'Cloggy' - (pv.) : Resembling, or similar to, wooden shoes; hard, possibly uncomfortable. Ex: "These shoes are very cloggy."

...which leads to IP-over-clogs, aka sneakernet speeds ;-p

Shouldn't "little spinny thing" be "little spinny thingy"?

I'm trying to figure out if it's my browser (all versions of FF I have ever used) or LQ code that is causing a lot of duplicate posts for me when my LAN/connection is bogged down.

Issue: after a certain amount of time waiting for an in-thread edit of my own post to complete, the page wholly reloads, producing TWO of my post.

I have already filed a bug report, but am now trying to determine IF it's a LQ thing, or a browser thing.

Of course !!! I thought it had been made pretty clear how the issue was manifesting, and the requirements to reproduce it, in posts 1, 10, 12, 35 and 41, but if you'd like to test for yourself, I'd be grateful for any feedback. It seems a couple of folks are familiar with the issue, but not many. To reproduce:

1 - If you don't have a dial-up internet connection, subscribe to your local dial-up provider. Ask for an account that's limited to 21.6kbps connection speed -- important!
2 - If you have less than 3 computers in the house, you'll need to bring the number up to 3 (pawn shops, recycling places can get you some cheap!)
3 - Configure one machine to do IP Masquerading for the other two machines, using IPtables.
4 - Set the second machine up with WinXP, and remove all virus protection mechanisms except for AVG-Free, which should be left enabled and set to download updates at a regular interval, something like every 15 minutes.
5 - The third machine, Install Slackware >= 11.0 with a Firefox version.
6 - Dial out to your new dial-up account & connect using the Slackware machine, and navigate to LQ.
7 - Now, just do as you normally would: Using Firefox, post helpful stuff, provide solutions for peoples' problems, etc. making sure to use the in-thread EDIT button on your posts on occasion, like when/if you make a typo or have some further information to add.

Eventually, the problem *might* manifest itself for you. If it does, please provide details of exactly what happened. Post the details in this very thread.

Thanks a lot!
Sasha

sorry if this was posted already:

My issue is that my post will not appear until I refresh ONLY if somebody posts to the topic after I have already loaded the page and am typing a Quick Reply or a full one.

Hi Lumak -- This is a known issue, and a fix, if possible, is in the works!
