Exclamation Testing thread about nothing (I'm trying to diagnose an LQ-related Firefox issue)

Feel free to post something relevant in here if you like.

I'm trying to figure out if it's my browser (all versions of FF I have ever used) or LQ code that is causing a lot of duplicate posts for me when my LAN/connection is bogged down.

Issue: after a certain amount of time waiting for an in-thread edit of my own post to complete, the page wholly reloads, producing TWO of my post.

I have already filed a bug report, but am now trying to determine IF it's a LQ thing, or a browser thing.

I also use FF and have seen the same thing happen on forums I run. So I presume it's a firefox issue (or possible VB / Firefox issue). And yes I've seen it across multiple versions of firefox just like you.

Thanks for that DotHQ!

I'm currently going through about:config but haven't found anything obvious.

I have never seen a case where it was obvious that FF was a problem. Here are two observations which I suppose could be related and/or relevant to your issue:

1. (Known issue with LQ) When posting to a thread, the new post does not always appear until clicking the FF refresh button.

2. After making a new post to a thread, I will typically hit backspace to go back to "latest messages", "my posts", or whatever. Sometimes, it will just take me back to the edit window for the post I just made. I have never found the pattern, but I have **hunch** that it takes a few minutes for some cache or cookie to clear so that FF will "forget" that I just posted to the thread. I don't know if the LQ server side is supposed to help it forget.

I have of course been distracted, come back to the computer and seen my message in the composition window and not remember if I sent it. This requires issue #2 to occur.

Hi Pixellany,

Yep, IIRC issue#1 you describe is, in some form, on the todo list. I have that happen too, but this I don't think (definitely don't know for sure) is related.

#2 for me (i.e. going BACK a page) only happens if I had posted from the Advanced Editor page: BACK takes be back to where I was editing. But, for in-thread editing, BACK always works as expected for me.

I can't figure this out... When the problem arises for me, the times I have paid enough attention, I get approx. 18 rotations (roughly 1Hz rate of rotation) of the little spinny thing, and then the wholly-reload occurs.

LOL.. *Presto* we have a dupe above. I had done a "Quick Reply" to pixellany, and after waiting about 10-15 seconds or so, a whole reload and a dupe.

Yep, exactly what I've seen on other VB forums.
When this does happen it takes a very long time to complete the post after you've clicked the submit button. It's happened to me and I am absolutely positive I did not hit the submit button twice.

OK, a moment ago, I had hit "Post Quick Reply" and about the time it was about to wholly reload, I clicked "Go Advanced" which took me to the advanced editor, where I immediately hit SUBMIT. LQ came back with a large message telling me that my post was "a duplicate of a post you have posted in the last 5 minutes. You will now be taken to the thread."

I wonder why it doesn't do this during the usual post-reload-dupe process?

I think what I will need to do, until a solution is discovered, is NOT use Quick Reply, nor do any in-thread post editing, while my network is boggy.

I've been updating Slack-64 via rsync for the past hour or so (hence the boggy network, thanks to *&#&*%^# Sympatico crap dialup 21.6k connection that's advertised as 56k), and during that time, I've had at least 10 posts duplicated around the forums..

If anyone at any time figures out what causes this, please please give details.

Thanks
Sasha
