Question Switch runs incredibly slow

I have a very strange problem. I have 3 10/100 mbps swtiches. My network setup is like this:

Code:
-DSL modem
     -switch (main)
         -switch
         -router
             -switch
2 of the switches will not work when they are not going through the router (~1mbps when they are not going through the router), however, 1 of them (the main one shown above) does. I really need the other switch connected to the main switch to work. Does anyone know why I might be having these problems with the 2 switches? They obviously work, because they work perfectly when they are behind the router.

Thanks in advance. With any confusion, please tell me.

Your breaking all the rules regarding switching and routing. Unless the switches are able to route. You need to place your switches behind you router. If you piggy back two switches via ethernet port then you can have some serious collision problems.

Now, you do not provide enough information regarding your setup. What kind of switches and router are you using?

So I shouldn't have another switch connected to that main switch? The problem is that I need my servers to have an external IP, so I have another switch in the other room that is connected to the main switch in order to be able to have multiple computers in one port. Anyways.. besides the collision thing.. I tested all 3 of the switches connected to the modem individually, and only that 1 worked.

Here is what I have:
Netgear FS605 v2 (The one that works externally)
Linksys ??
Siemens Speedstream ss2108

As you can see I do not know much about networking. I appreciate you help.

hi,

Why dont you do something like :

DSL
- Router
- - Switch
- - Switch
- - Switch
?

My setup is something like :

DSL
- Router
- - Server 1 (web/ftp/.... )
- - PC 1 (static )
- - PC 2 (static )
- - Switch ( PCs ... ( DHCP ) )

i can have between 3 and 9 PCs connected to the network and i can use port forwarding to connect to specific portson PC1 and 2 every other ports are managed by the server firewall.

Why not just get a 24 port switch.

-OR-

If you do not want a server or servers behind your router then its time for multiple NIC cards.

server (three nics) One nic to the internet, one nic to the other server, and one nic to the router.
---
server (one nic)
---
router
---
switch
---
workstations

There is only one real bottle neck here.

Or remove the router completely, as your server computer should be able to handle that (unless you want the multiple subnets).
