stupid tv commercials
Is it just me, or, are tv commercials getting louder and stupider and thumpier?
They are so loud and thumpy and in your face. And the volume of a commercial is at least 15% louder than whatever you happen to be watching. I assume that the advertising agencies are contracted to design their commercials to a lowest common denominator of the public. What do you think? |
I don't watch much TV so I guess I wouldn't know.. hmmm..
You could always mute commercials, like my grandma use to always do when watching TV.. :) |
Yeah, I think its the same thinking process that gave us pop-ups, spam and interstitials...
Most marketters think (I use the word loosely) that ANY publicity is good publicity because you get name recognition. Unfortunately they are somewhat right because the world seems FULL of morons who fall into that "Buy! Buy! Buy! Follow the hype! Do NOT think...just consume!!!" philosophy that is forcefed to us on a daily basis wherever you look. Its hard to avoid when you get hammered with this subliminal message every second of the day... |
Consider the obnoxiousness of the advertising before you buy a product. Stupid commercials are being "voted for" by sales. Telemarketing exists because it actually works on people who are ignorant or don't give a damn about the overall scene..

what do you do when you no longer have a choice? Most companies these days have obnoxious advertising and its very hard to NOT vote with your wallet. Esp. when all the choices end up being owned by the same (or 2 or 3 at most) conglomerates of companies. |
If sales are somehow forced, sooner or later the company realizes that their success is in spite of the advertising, not because of it. A company will not waste money on ads once they have a captive audience --and-- necessary product.
I am a pretty hardnosed do-it-yourselfer and consider very few things necessities.. food, shelter, water. With the non-essentials, I weigh the value of the luxury item against the amount of obnoxiousness I am willing to put up with and support. |
I do hate the volume thing, commercails can be a little more quite. The stupidest commercail that I have saw, has to be like all the Herbel Essane Shampoo ones. shampoo must turn those whores on.

I can't decide which commercials I hate the most:
America Online.. bunch of moron-testimonials about how easy AOL is, even for the computer illiterate Local (Texas) commercials touting wretchedly excessive SUVs.. macho cowboy / family crap Something wrong in your life?? Ask your doctor if our little purple pill (that until now you didn't realize you can't live without) is right for you  A little dispenser for both regular toilet paper and moist butt-wipes. |
I agree with you, I HATE commercials for PRESCRIPTION drugs...even worse when they don't say what its for (No no, you don't need to know...run along like a good automaton and beg your doctor for it!! You'll see!!!)
My favorites (sarcasm here) are the viagra commercials.... Apparently that pill does a LOT more than get it up...it also makes them smarter, more alert, superman-like even...gee. As if all of a sudden some limp guy can get it up all his problems go away...errrr One the other hand, I found that IKEA commercial with the lamp that gets thrown away pretty original and funny |
(to the tune of "No Limits" by some Dutch group)
BUY BUY, BUY BUY BUY BUY, BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY MORE LINNUCKS! I really like latenight chatline ads. Oh, and sanitary towel (with wings, not flaps) and laxative ads with names like Sennekot and Movelat. I should get out more. :D |
Hehehe, you just made me remember this one commercial I keep seeing on the weather network for (get this):
Zim's crack cream :D You aren't the only one who needs to get out more :D |
i think that the funniest commercial is the one for viagra where the guy is walking thru the office with a great big smile on his face and everyone keeps asking weather he got a raise or lost weight or a whole slew of complimentary things of why he was so happy. all i keep thinking is "the reason he is so happy is cause he has a woody the size of texas in his pants and his wife isn't getting enough" rotflmao!

Great responses, but we're getting a little off track here. I'm looking for people who want to trash the stupidity of the loudness of commercials with me.
In order to maintain a consistent volume, I have to lower the volume on my tv by 5 or 6 of those little green vertical bars for every commercial interruption. And seems as though many commercials pay some extra to stand behind the scenes and pound steadily on some sort of big bass drum or hit some constant bass note on a guitar: THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP or BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM for the entire duration of the commercial. And then there are those loud stupid ford commercials. And and.... aarrgghh (yes yes.... and i do use the off button, often) :p aaaahhhhmmmmm....... |
I tend to not watch a lot of TV because I'm busy here or working on my linux box. When I do watch TV sometimes I know exactly what you mean. I usally mute the commericials and check my email during the commercials. If I know I want to watch something I will just record it so that I can just zap through the commercials. Since most everyone here uses linux try this for your TV viewing enjoyment I tried but it cools preety cool

Usually I tape the stuff I want and fast forward through the commercials when I do watch it :D
