Storage Media: History

Storage media

...

Floppies...Zip drives...Worm drives...punch cards...ram drives...compact disks...tape drives...smart media cards...and the like... What about them? When and where are they from? Possible transfer speeds? I've been thinking of getting all of the storage media devices together i can: just because. I think it would be something nifty to talk about also. :-D

oh well,

All very well, but surely they're all variations on a few categories:

Card - eg Jaquard Loom, Punched Card, Paper Tape, etc
Magnetic - Mag. Tape, Disk, etc
Memory - etc, etc

There must be so may variations on each, where do you draw a distinction between them?

\Oh-e-oh.

I'd just like to catch up really on what has been zooming me by-
I went to the Portland Itec convention last year (which the next one is coming up December 10-11 ;-)) : I saw things like Imation with 10gb disks...for zip drive type o' things.

I do know of the different storage medias...and im just wondering where everything really stands...

Optic:
CDrom
DVDrom

Magnetic:
Zip disks
Hard disks
Floppy disks
LS-120 disks
Syquest disks
HiFD

Magneto Optic:
MiniDisc ...
Kinda stuck here...

Just wanting to understand and find out more about storage media, i know i find it intresting. ;)--
