Well, I must say. I'm thrilled.

...as if all the windows advertising wasn't enough already...

I'd been meaning to change my email address from hotmail for while now, but this certainly provides the impetus to do so.

Does anybody have any suggestions for decent free email providers with plenty of storage?
I don't like the idea of google corp. reading my emails, so not Gmail, and I'd rather not use Yahoo.

Why is google more likely to read your emails that microsoft is?...

Even though I don't always agree with google's policies towards linux (not providing windows ports of its software, etc), I have to say that GMail kicks ass

Gmail doesn't read your messages. A script looks for keywords to display ads.

Inbox.com and gmail are the two best, IMHO.

yes, that's what I meant.

But thanks for the inbox recommendation.
(I'll pass on hackermail as I don't think my computer skillz quite merit that one.)

cheers

It didn't require anything when I joined (over a year ago). I guess some things have changed. Sorry.

Hi, GrapefruiTgirl...

How do you find out some information about that service? POP3 access? IMAP? What? Storage capacity? Is it free? Etc? Can't find anything on the web page about the service.

LinuxMail is free. However, most of the services you are asking (pop3, imap) are not available for free. You have to then purchase one of their premium services. For POP3 service:

One Year: US$19.95; Two Years: US$34.95

You can, however, receive any e-mail from another service (as gmail), directly on your linuxmail account, freely.

No doubt, it is a good service. But I fail to see why to use this service (and pay for it), since most likely your ISP provides even services to host your homepages (at least mine does) and as good as linuxmail is (and as cool as it sounds to have a "linuxmail" address) it does not hold a candle when compared to gmail, be it price, features or searching... and it is full of ads as well (unless you purchase yet another premium service called "Ads-free", charged at: One Year: US$4.99; Two Years: US$8.99).

Would I recommend linuxmail to anyone? No.

linuxmail

Well vtel57, I just went to Google and Searched for 'free foreign email providers' or something like that. This: http://www.outblaze.com/index.php is the website for the folks who run Linuxmail, and a whack of other mail services.
I don't have handy the google-search results that first led me there though, but if you Googled linuxmail, you'd prolly find the info you are looking for.

@ Mega Man - Full of ads?? Purchase a premium service to get rid of them?? LOL.. I have something better: 'Firefox' . I haven't seen an ad on linuxmail (or anywhere else for that matter in a long time), and thankfully their site isn't chock full of layered frames and weird junk that's hard to get rid of, like msn/hotmail is. No microsoft/msn ads, branding, offers, images, or crap strewn about that take forever to reload on dialup (I have 28.8k -- that's it ). I had only used Gmail for a very short time, but to compare the two, I prefer linux mail. Why? I want a mailbox. Period. I don't need chat forums/instant mailbox messaging, 100Gb of mail storage (or whatever it has), I don't use POP3 or IMAP or anything else like that.

So vtel, if one wants regular, fast, text-based, normal email account, for free, which does what a mail account should do (send & receive mail) and where you can import/export addressbook contacts, have a signature if you want, and disconnect from MS.. Linuxmail will do the job.
PS - Here's a good about page.
