Today Microsoft announced that CEO Steve Ballmer will be retiring within the next 12 months. He said, "There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time. ... My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company’s transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction." Ballmer, 57, has been Microsoft's CEO since taking over the role from Bill Gates in January, 2000. The company's board of directors has formed a committee to find a replacement for Ballmer, and he will continue his duties until a new CEO is found.
This makes me sad . I know Ballmer has done a great job so far of running M$ into the ground, but it's not time to quit yet, because his job isn't over. There is still time to finish what you've started, Mr. Ballmer. Do another monkey dance and scream until you rip your vocal cords again and I think you may just put the final nail in the M$ coffin.
I'll think I'll send him an e-mail telling him to reconsider.
There's no way to transition back to the sneakers, Jolt Cola and pizza culture that made Microsoft great. Once you go down that fascist corporate road and cut a deal with the Devil it's just a matter of time before you become the M&A (merger and acquisition) target. Microsoft was never great.
I started using MSDOS in the mid 80's when I had a research project that provided me with my first PC, a DEC Rainbow with two chips: a Z80 which ran CP/M and an 8086 for MSDOS. From the outset I never used MS software; only the OS. In those days MS had the reputation of providing crap software and I never found a reason to contest that opinion. From PFE to WordPerfect to LPA Prolog to Mosiac to Eudora to Midnight Commander...etc. etc. 3rd party solutions were the way to go. My first contact with linux was with RedHat (pre-RHEL days) in 1994. I used WindowsNT for a couple of years but never any Windows software if I could avoid it. MSWord was a joke from the day it first appeared.
So, no, Microsoft was never "great".

My pre-PC TRS-80 used Microsoft BASIC and Microsoft DOS is what made the IBM PC do anything at all. I remember actually meeting Bill Gates back then and he was wearing a suit with sneakers. The culture changed, like is currently happening in Linux-land thanks to fascist corporatism.
