The USA is going to hell in a hand basket

I expect that soon the "peasants" with torches and pitch forks in hand, to storm the "castle"
then take care of the "count" or "evil doctor" that lives there.

H_TeXMeX_H 03-25-2013 05:56 AM

The "peasants" are too fat and lazy and well entertained. They may go to a protest here and there, but storming the castle is very unlikely.

cynwulf 03-25-2013 06:07 AM

That's the problem with modern consumer capitalism - the have-nots tend to migrate from have-not-land to have-a-lot-land... inconvenient that...

I blame the internet...

Since I do not know what jobs this excerpt pertains to, there are at least two possibilities.
1) A legal scam. Charge people a lot of money to bring them in and toss them away.
What is the fee? And, if the graduates get jobs, how many years making an "excellent salary" will it take them to recoup the money spent on the fee? Excellent salary is of course subjective and I would be astonished if there is a guarantee of a job.
2) They are desperate to fill empty positions and are trying to attract people to fill them. If there is a shortage of people at home, the alternative is to bring people in from the outside.

Those are the first two possibilities that come to my mind.

sundialsvcs 03-25-2013 07:49 AM

I assure you, there is no "shortage of people at home."

Nor is this posting any sort of a scam: the company exists and that's what they do. I myself have walked through cube-farms with pictures on them, because no one could recognize the names, and I have also seen seventeen people pile out of one two-bedroom apartment. A small bus picks them up and, when it drops them off again, they all go back inside.

The exploitation is obvious in the many bullet-points of this advertising – not only of the workers, but of the hiring companies. You can plainly see the barest attempt at training; the exploitative housing conditions and the fact that money's being taken out of what the company presumes they're paying the worker (which could well put their compensation below the minimum wage).

Okay, but never mind: if this is an engineering forum, then this also makes no engineering sense. After Mr. Eli Whitney perfected the manufacturing system of interchangeable parts, "a million monkeys" actually could operate the machinery that turned out thousands of perfect pistols. But we're not at that point now. Neither the clients, nor the earnest young folks looking for a leg-up, are going to find what they were expecting here.

17 people out of a one bedroom apartment. I think you mentioned it in another thread earlier. Are there no zoning laws where you live that restrict people from using apartments like dormitories - or a corporate guest house?

In post #1, it says

basis for F1 Students.
Any idea who is an F1 student.?

OK

Enforcing those laws would require people checking every flat in every building. Not feasible in a city with millions of people. Enforcement requires neighbourhood residents alerting the authorities to something suspicious.

During times of austerity, forget the fat cats who created the mess in the first place - instead turn the masses against that age old daemon - the economic migrant... it gets them every time...

LOL... every time we discuss at work how the system is broken and needs to be fixed... I say we need to march on Washington but the powers that be know damn well that all they have to do is make sure FOX airs "American Idol" or some other reality and the revolution will die right then and there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STEM_fields says in part,
"The acronym has been used regarding access to United States work visas for immigrants who are skilled in these fields. It has also become commonplace in education discussions as a reference to the shortage of skilled workers and inadequate education in these areas.[1] The initiative began to address the perceived lack of qualified candidates for high-tech jobs."

sundialsvcs:
job-searching on craigslist? Ouch.
I sure hope you're using Thunderbird in RSS "mode" for that. It's the only sane thing to do. :)

sundialsvcs: are you not working at all, or sorta under-employed, if I may ask?
If it's a 'nunya' or 'nacho' answer, then I'll be okay with that too. ;)

And how do you know that? Did the ad name the company, or did you actually respond to the ad?

I would like to correct your tense.
The USA has gone to hell in a handbasket.

I would not be surprised if The USA no longer exists as a sovereign nation in 30 years.

The public indoctrination centers have filled the young skulls full of mush with historical revisionist history, marxist ideology, forced acceptance of perversion, told them that they were gifted when they were quite stupid, done their best to blur lines of gender, told them that they can not even say Jesus in the school but can talk about sodomy openly,....but can't do 4th grade math, can't read, can't speak english well enough to communicate a simple thought, can't write, can't make change, can't walk 2 miles without a heart attack because of being obese, can't think from being put on psychokinetic drugs for years, but can walk into schools and shoot thier peers like it was a cute video game.......

In the meantime the US military has been trying to occupy the world and force it's brand of government on people who don't want it, the goofy (expletive) in chief is bowing to foreign dictators, is trying to incite riots among his own people, is trying his best to start class wars, forcing more government control on a people who want less government, buying up millions of rounds of ammo and stock piling it because Americans are talking openly about civil war on forums and in the workplace, the shelves in the sporting goods stores are empty of ammo and firearms and there are waiting lists of months to fill orders, some firearm companies are refusing to sell firearms or ammo to the police, government leaders are building bunkers to protect them when the collapse and civil war starts......

Yes folks.....it's way past going.

Oh yes... and let just let millions of people who have committed felonies by sneaking into the country stay with no questions asked. Why not, they march in parades openly demanding rights as citizens....let's even let foreign nationals vote in out elections....Grrrr.

No, not particularly. :) Always looking ahead, though ... especially these days. I do keep my eye on Craigslist in several municipalities, because many people have discovered it.

(To clarify, since you don't accept private messages, my role has always been that of a primary-contractor, mostly a project architect or project manager, where Linux is part but not all of the equation. A "phat lead" is always welcome...)

This advertisement just floored me when I saw it. At first I thought, "this must be a hoax," but you can trace it down quite easily to a company that's positively gushing about its high-tech capabilities.

That is not a uniquely American problem. It is also the situation in Canada and Australia, and I have heard it claimed for Britain as well. A populace that is mostly illiterate, can only speak some form of gibberish that resembles English and cannot do math with numbers beyond their number of fingers is the foundation of our brave new world.
