Sorry, Linux is done for. FREE WINDOWS!

http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/28/54...ing-experiment <<-- its an article.

Microsoft is planning a free (as in beer) version of Windows 8.1.

Linux look out!

In all seriousness, I imagine that this will be a free to install operating system that runs more like a 'free to play' game. Want to open an excel document? 10 credits. Send an email? 1 credit.

Oh . Boy .

Not bad but would be better if they released source code for past older Windows instead like Win 98 or 2k! XP not yet. Then people would be able to make something worthy out of them. :)

sundialsvcs 03-03-2014 11:03 AM

Nice idea ... but I would fire whoever came up with it, on the spot.

Germany_chris 03-03-2014 11:05 AM

I wouldn't use Windows even if it's free..the late '90's and early '00's are not far enough in history for me.

metaschima 03-03-2014 11:27 AM

WOW ! I'm switching right away. Forget stable, secure, FLOSS, I'm switching back to proprietary, backdoored, crippleware. Hell yeah baby !

I wouldn't switch back even if they paid me.

Agreed. Even if Windows were released now as completely freeware, I simply prefer linux.

I'd rather take a shower in prison.

Amazing how many times XP support has been extended. I still have a couple unused OEM copies. Wonder if M$ really will kill extended, extended, extended support for XP this time around.... Have more 'puters around here than I can count, at least off the top of my head. All but one run *nix but do have an unequivocable business case for that one. Loathe the thought of anything post XP Pro.

Arcane 03-03-2014 01:00 PM

@gotfw: Microsoft says they will stop XP support on April 8, 2014.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. The reason Google phones are so cheap is because Google spies on you and sells your personal information to corporations. Thus they are not actually cheaper, the hidden fee is your soul. Zuckerberg is not providing Facebook to you free of charge out of the goodness of his heart. If Microsoft wants to integrate Bing into it, they will probably do something similar to what Google and Facebook are doing now.

They should do like RedHat instead: open source and charge for updates / support. I'd rather pay for the beer than run unknown code.

Windows 3.1 -- ah, the nostalgia.

honeybadger 03-03-2014 02:33 PM

I would be very interested in windows 98.
If *they* ever free the source code I would run it on a virtual machine. That's about it.

enorbet 03-03-2014 03:24 PM

I'm afraid I can never trust Billy, Ballmer and the Boys ever again and what's more I would never willingly subject myself to the hair-pulling frustration so common in Windows operating systems of ANY vintage as a main system. I only dual boot rarely and less and less over time just to keep a mainstream hand in play for work.

For me the old cliche of "Hurt me once, Shame on you.... Hurt me twice, shame on me" applies here. I'll go back to windows. Sure... when monkeys fly out my butt.

Well, I don't think to be so brave :)
Anyway, I'd be curious to see the effect about number of linux users if this will happen.
