Sol or SME ?
 

I want to set up a small home server, nothing to dramatic.
Options at this stage are SME 6.0 or SoL 18
Has anyone used both that can give comparisons ?
what are peoples experiences with either

I think exploring mars might be better than having a society of Manufacturing engineer in the home...

I am asking if anyone has used either SOL 18 or SME 6 to please give a brief report so I can make a decision as to which to use.

If you dont know what they are or never used either, then you can't answer the Q.In fact they are both Linux distros that are optimized for a server. At this stage I'm tending towards using SME but I'd like to hear from anyone using SOL to make a fair judgement.

SME 6 is based on Red Hat and SOL 18 is completely independant ( Austrian Company ).

I am currently setting up a SME 6.0 Server/gateway and it really works well. It has a simple interface and works with minimal hardware and administration time. This is in my home, and I am using a Pentium II 200mz with 50Mb 70pin ram and 8.4Gb hard drive, cable modem, and 4 clients. It also works seamless with Dyndns.org for web serving. One problem is that if port 80 is blocked, it will need an address something like [url]https://www.somepage.org to access pages on the Internet.

just got to figure out what I can do with it
the I-bays idea looks useful
I've got two Lan's at home that I'm going to radio link then I'll probably set it up properly
dhcp, internal mail and all that stuff
at the moment everything is peer to peer
I want to get a UPS for it too
and my firewall, good practice for my son who is thinking of becoming a sys-admin

BTW how does yours cope with only 50 Megs of ram ??

It works surprisingly well. Of course there are only 4 clients. I am hoping to get a stick of 128mb SDRAM in a month or so. I am currently trying to get the printer to work with USB. The interface is slick and seems to work well.

It does not recognize the usb port with a HP845c. The problem might be the motherboard, seeing how I just cobbed a bunch of junk to make this thing. I am going to try using the parallel port with a HP672c now. Hopefully things will go better.

I run a HP 3550 but off another computer
so I've yet to try and set it up properly with SME
and it will be USB

I'm curious because SME is built around an older version of Red Hat, although some of the packages are modern like Samba. If your HP 845 c is fairly modern it may not be supported yet by the kernel.

BTW are you going to try and put a 128 mb ram into a 72 pin ram slot, ummm is your current ram EDO or something. Its just that most ram ( SD ram ) is 168 pin and unless you have a 168 pin slot of course. just a thought.

Yeh, I have a 168 pin slot. The motherboard is a FIC PR-20006 I think.
