If you needed to use ndiswrapper and wpa_supplicant your review may have had some cons.

This is the show stopper for me. While it is a relatively painless excercise in many distros, the buntus make it an exercise in futility, albeit possible.

To the nay-sayers.

I disagree with your ill-educated opinions.

The review he was making was one of capability and performance, not a head-to-head comparison review.

The review was, in fact, of Ubuntu and how well or how poorly it works.

The review, in fact, was not Ubuntu vs. Brand X, and how Ubuntu functions differently from Brand X.

Perhaps one day, you may evolve and develop yet another brain. If you do, please for the love of god, don't abuse it with more alcohol in your college years, as you may lose a lot of valuable information - like writing formats and common sense.

Now, if everyone has been properly educated in what the HELL a review is vs. a head-to-head comparison, and the do's and do not's therein...

Maybe we can say, "Hey, it wasn't a bad review, but...here's a few points of fact." and take the fanboi comments and shove them somewhere your sun god doesn't shine.

In short, my only negative comments on his review are as follows:

He makes note of zero cons, then goes on and makes note of a few issues.

Issues == cons. By stating that honestly and openly, you'd make it a far better and more acceptable review.

Cheers,
Ghost

So is it better to be ill-educated or ill-mannered?....Oh... wait.... you're both :-)

Sonny, obviously you've got a lot of growing up to do. No one cares what your authoratative declaration of the one and only true definition of a "review" is. Someday you're going to have to either learn to live with the fact that not everyone bows down to your holy authority, or you'll have to become a genocidal megalomaniac dictator like Saddam Hussein (things worked out real great for him).

For me, a "pro" is only a "pro" if it's better than the alternatives, and a "con" is only a "con" if it's worse.

Deal with it.

Wow, you're special. How about arguing the facts I laid out?

Oh wait! You can't. So what time is it (fan)bois and grls?

That's right, Character Assassination Time.

*golfclap*

Here's your sign, your helmet, oh look, and here comes the short bus for you now.

And the only reason they agreed to be nice and pick you up at your home was because you added the smilie to your post, attempting to make everyone think you're just a SWELL guy, and instead, showing everyone what an arrogant contemptible ass you really are.

Have a great day.

Cheers,
Ghost

I'm sorry that the truth isn't in your world, grandpa.

That's okay. It's in mine. Which was my point. Defending someone that other people were flaming over points he never even made in his review, by attempting to COMPARE two or more different operating systems.

But that's okay, see, in this society, when you speak out with authority and a little force and volume, you realize there's always going to be some idiot out there who just DOESN'T GET IT, and wants to bash YOU instead of the jackasses who were wrong in the first place.

Now here you are, slamming me with absolutely no backing other than "Well, in MY world, the sky is yellow, and that's just the way it is...yahuck."

Bravo.

BTW, in MY world, the sky is usually blue. And my "authoratative" (I think you meant "authoritative" but hey, it's one letter...we have spell check built into Linux...so I'm sure you knew what you were doing...) declaration happens to actually hit the nail on the head, as the definition of the word "review" is:

"An inspection or examination for the purpose of evaluation."

And as everyone knows, if you are going to examine something and evaluate it's performance, you focus on the object and its own merits. You do not compare two objects, even if similar. Doing so results in a comparison, not a review.

And "comparison" means:

"A statement or estimate of similarities and differences."

Just in case you're a complete Nimrod and didn't even happen to know that big word.

Just because someone is forceful with their statements, doesn't mean they're wrong.

Or does it, in your world?

Cheers,
Ghost

If you don't like the default look, try this theme by this French guy, he makes some absolutely amazing themes. They make suse look like dirt, seriously .

They can also be found on gnome-look.org and should have instructions in both French and English.
There is another amazing theme called Elegant Brit (not specifically ubuntu) but it still has a few issues that affect java applications in particular (like Netbeans having illegible menus). But I have actually seens some Mac guys drool all over it so that is pretty telling.
jay, sorry for my late reply. Sometimes I think "I will reply to that one later" and I forget. I was not ignoring you or hari by any means .

Anyway, thanks for the link. I am checking it out now and it looks great . I've found some good themes and icons here as well:

http://art.gnome.org/

You probably already knew it, but there such a thing as too much info I guess

Cheers everyone!

You can live in your fun little fantasy world all you like. In your fantasy world, there's just "some idiot" who disagrees with you. For the rest of us, the "some idiot" is you (and more for your self-defeating unhelpful attitude than for whatever your exact point is supposed to be).

pot? kettle? black?

I've always wondered about those people who think being louder and ruder equates to being right. It's interesting how rarely they are right, and how often they are only loud and rude. Even if someone of this exquisite level of social and intellectual advancement is actually right occasionally (every dog has his day) the delivery is enough to make any contrary position look much more attractive.

Golly! This thread became awfully bad tempered, didn't it? Look, here's the deal, when a thread like this is posted it is purely good manners to do a lot of back slapping. No one is supposed to bring their opinions to the thread. That's just rude!

While I agree with the sentiment that issues are "cons", I completely disagree with the way it was said. Now, calm it down and all be friends or I'll make you stand in a corner. And if you think it's not enforceable, think again - I will personally go to all of your houses and make sure you're facing the wall.

Now be friends and stroke MMX's ego

I just installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron on my work system (yes, my boss allowed me to dual-boot) and I find it a bit odd, having been used to KDE's convenience all these years. Gnome does take a bit of getting used to. On the other hand, Ubuntu does seem to provide GUI wrappers for most configuration which could get a bit confusing...

In Gnome, there seems to be no way to just look at the system configuration easily though. I had to resort to the command line lspci and lsusb.

However, the wireless was a problem, so I had to go the ndiswrapper route and so far it seems to be working all right...

To get back to the original question. That review is no more biassed than any other review I've seen. Look at those for Slackware 12.1. I like Ubuntu, never had any trouble with it, but prefer Slackware because it gives me more incentive to tinker and learn the nuts and bolts of GNU/Linux. I have, of late, been pondering once more the possible exfenestration of my 'puter. I would keep Slack of course, and perhaps dual-boot with Ubuntu, and maybe triple-boot those with Arch, Gentoo, or LFS.

You know I must be getting old, but I've started hating "tinkering" with computers etc.

In fact, I'm starting to get sick of computers in general...

Same thing happened to me today. My boss allowed me to dual-boot. However, I am not sure I want to do that. We use MS SQL Server Studio Management and I wonder how I would do to work without that program
