Smaller linux Distributions?

Is there a smaller, less bloated Linux version available that will run XMMS and other standard Linux programs that is easy to install. I have RH 8 and 9 but i want to install another version on a second hard drive i have to see the differences, to browse the internet and hopefully one that is faster. thanks.

I have yet to burn Damn Small Linux to CD, but at 50 MB it is, well, damn small.
There are also distributions like Peanut Linux and Vector Linux.

Peanut Linux and Small Linux are good distros if you want to turn an old 386/486 with little RAM into a useable machine. Damn Small Linux is a live distro and therefore does not run off your harddrive.

If you just want a fast, small(er), and useable distro for a machine that is better than a 486, like it's been said twice before...

Slackware.

Debian will install in 96MB. So might get everything < 120 Mb

Personally, I feel anything one is able to give back to the Linux community is repayment for what has been provided.
I also believe that is the way it is intended.

damn small linux is supposed to be able to be installed on a hard drive just like knoppix can (of which damn small is partially based upon). i wonder if the same instructions for knoppix would be relevant for damn small. the guy's site lacks some important documentation (why, man why- i need to install this right now?!?)?????

Damn small linux is pretty easy to use. You just boot and in 5 minutes its up. its pretty fast two. No real need for documentation.

yeah, it's a demo cd like knoppix- got that much so far. do you know how to install damn small to a hard drive? check out the knoppix instructions (tried some commands w/ damn small w/o luck):
