Slackware propaganda

Slackware propaganda. Little story.

Guess, everyone already knows that I'm the most annoying newbie here. I use Slackware10.0 not much, but it tought me in 1 day (the first day of configuring - anyone remember that "beautiful" day?) the things what I didn't learn within 6-7 months "using" Mandy9.2 (it was just standing alone, taking 4 GB uselessly). But actually I tried only these two. So I'll try not to put s**t on another distros, but u know me...
Let's go 8 months back. I installed Mandy9.2. Wow! Linux! I'm cool!!! But I didn't like Linux this time. What for? I like to play games - but no Linux games. Always enter password - oh, s**t! No, Windows is better - I thought. Easy, convinient: why to use Linux. So I was using win2k (xp) all this time. Now the end of 2004, December. Slackware. Hmmm... 2 CDs? Mandy had 3... Hmmm... text based installation? Awful... Again password? For root? Mandy could allow without it... Ok, the fisrt start. startx. ???. Screen falls asleep. Where's GUI!? Reset (cuz I didn't know how to reboot it). startx. Screen falls asleep. F***! What the s**t! Again ( ~5 times). Calling to cousin, He gave me Slack10.
- "GUI doesn't work!"
- "Tried startx"?
- "Aha, but monitor falls asleep everytime I run it"
- "Your monitor parametrs configured improperly"
- "And how to"?
- "See F***ingManual to your monitor."
- "Thanks. Bye."
- "Bye"
??? What parameters??? Ok, I know that GUI is called X Window. And I know that shell helps me with: typing beginning of unknown cmd, then pressing <Tab>. Ok, I type 'x', press <Tab>. 193 cmds R displayed! What the ****! ****! ****! Damn! Watching, trying... not that. Trying... not that. 4 hours passed... Trying xorgconfig. WoW! This one!!! Ok, Ok, Ok, WHAT??? Horizontal and Vertical synchronization values??? What's this? Choosing default values. startx. WORKS!!! But wait. 50 Hz! AAAAAh! What the ****! Going to KDE control center. Only 50 Hz is available. I had 85 Hz in win. Hmmm. Rerunning xorgconfig for several times to understand it better. Aha, I need Horz & Vert syncs! Going to win, watching monitor CD... Watching. Aha, found! 30-70 Horz, 50-160 Vert! Going to Linux. Rerunning xorgconfig. Better - 1280x1024 + 60 Hz. But I use 1024x768. Rerunning xorgconfig several times. Aha - I can choose default maximum resolution! startx. Great! Works fine. Running XMMS. No sound device? Ok, I have to configure it. But what cmd??? Go to console. Just press <Tab>. 3082 cmds!!! No, I'm not so strong. Typing 'a'. <Tab>. 117 cmds, better. a2p, a2ps... aatest, abiword, acpid... adjtimex... Running 'em one by one... adsl-connect, allec... alsaconf. Running alsaconf. alsa is Advanced Linux Sound Architecture! Found! startx. xmms. Plays!!! I'm the most happy man on Earth!!! Of course, it was luck that it's called alsa, not some w... But I couldn't use my stupid win-modem. So I got addicted to LQ from win Opera7 (cracked, of course). And was asking how to use it on this forum. A week passed. But then... I got it (thanks to all who helped, and especially to 'gnashley'). And I've known that I've Conexant chipset on my modem. While I was configuring Slack first week I learned better some cmds from my Linux book about RH7. Yes, I've known what is man pages, what is "/" and all these easy things. Within 1 week! Cuz I HAD to read more... Slack forced me. Hard, but USEFULL! Even forced me to look much in my English-Russian dictionary, so I've learned some new words! So, is this few for a complete newbie??? I'm thankful Slack for that! It forced me to use console. And I found that it is much more convinient than any (yeah, believe me) GUI. So if you think that console is just past - you're corrupted by windows. JUST TRY SLACK AND YOU'LL KNOW MUCH MORE ABOUT YOUR PC. AND YOU WILL REALLY LOVE LINUX!!! YOU'LL LOVE THIS FREEDOM! Take a look at avarage selfconfiguring-system users. Do they know their monitor parameters? Do they know how to create a symbolic link? What's APM? What "hda" or "hdc" means? What is stored in PATH? Did they know where "mans" are stored? You'll have to know it while Slackware using. And in the end you'll be really able to say: "F*** M$ and LOSEdos". And there're no problems with mouse, fonts, etc. You will know how to fix it. AND you'll be really able to help to your friends to install Linux (even if they don't want it ). I know it's hard first time. But imagine such windows like human world: everything you do - you succeed, all ask you: 'Are you sure...", all seems beautiful and nice - but sometimes crashes. And we don't know how to repair it. F***! It seems to me that we already live in this windows like world... So let's change it. And let's begin from... M$. Let's use only Linux for work and leave windows only games. And may be one day some people from Linux community will make a perfect game, using OpenGL, not DirectX. Then another. And people will have a look at Linux. And that will be beginning of M$ end, I'm sure. Someday... But first you should love Linux. The shortest way IS Slackware.
Thanks for reading

Instead of rambling on yourself and adding to the
annoyance, why don't you just report a post like
that in the future?

Thanks,
Tink

I see u don't understand me. I say that u should start using Linux from Slackware. It'll make u underst& WHAT IS LINUX FOR. In Linux YOU should choose what u want. But making it more stupid IS NOT the right way. I don't say that one should not use GUI, but first u must configure it a bit just to understand a bit more. Using Slack YOU define how it works. I just see many people who think: I can install this game on windows - I understand. I was actually one of 'em. But since I use Slack I understand that I know NOTHING, that I'm just a "swaggerer". Windows is for the lazy, Linux is for those who wants to make more than just a shortcut on desktop. Tell me why do you need another Windows. Why don't you want to do it yourself? Why do you want someone to clean up your a$$? Damn! I want to clean it up myself! It's mine. And Linux IS 4 U. It's not to get your money. It's for you to learn. For you to take part in its improvement. IT IS FOR YOU! It's not just another OS. That's a realistic philosophy, philosophy of life. So I should learn it myself, shut up and learn it. Cuz I'm just to annoying.

But about a month or two after current post. (When I'll stop spumming on this forum and begin to learn.)
SLACKWARE IS THE SHORTEST WAY TO LEARN LINUX.
